Fleet Maintenance Assistant $25 to $30 per hour

Position Summary
Metropolitan Transportation Network is seeking a dependable and mechanically inclined Fleet Maintenance Assistant to support the maintenance and safe operation of our school bus fleet in Red Wing.
This position works alongside our Fleet Mechanic and assists with routine vehicle maintenance, basic repairs, inspections, shop organization, and other fleet-related duties. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on work and wants to expand their mechanical knowledge and experience.
ASE certification is not required. We are looking for someone who is reliable, safety-focused, willing to learn, and comfortable working with vehicles, tools, and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Fleet Mechanic with routine maintenance and repairs on school buses and other company vehicles
- Perform basic maintenance tasks such as checking and changing fluids, replacing filters, changing bulbs, and assisting with batteries
- Assist with tire inspections, tire changes, rotations, and pressure checks
- Help inspect brakes, belts, hoses, lights, mirrors, wipers, and other vehicle components
- Assist with preventive maintenance and scheduled vehicle inspections
- Identify and report visible damage, mechanical concerns, or safety issues
- Clean and organize the maintenance shop, tools, equipment, and parts areas
- Pick up, receive, and organize parts and maintenance supplies
- Maintain basic maintenance records and work-order documentation
- Assist with vehicle cleaning, fueling, and preparation as needed
- Follow all company safety procedures and applicable transportation requirements
- Perform other fleet and facility-support duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Mechanical aptitude and an interest in vehicle maintenance
- Previous experience working with vehicles, equipment, maintenance, farming, construction, or another hands-on trade is helpful but not required
- Ability to safely use basic hand and power tools
- Dependable attendance and strong attention to safety
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively with the Fleet Mechanic
- Willingness to learn new maintenance and repair skills
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- ASE certification is not required
- School bus or diesel maintenance experience is helpful but not required
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and work underneath or around vehicles
- Ability to stand and work on concrete surfaces for extended periods
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to safely operate tools and maintenance equipment
