Position Summary
The Legal Counsel supports the company by providing legal guidance and oversight on title insurance, real estate transactions, underwriting, and claims in Indiana and Michigan. This role requires a high level of Honesty and Integrity, deep knowledge of state-specific regulations, and the ability to apply sound legal judgment under strict deadlines. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Review outside counsel legal documents for compliance with Indiana and Michigan real estate laws, title insurance regulations, and closing requirements, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and ethical standards.
- Draft and prepare legal documents for Indiana and Michigan transactions, including deeds, mortgages, affidavits, powers of attorney, and other closing documents, while maintaining strict attention to detail and adherence to state law.
- Provide legal guidance on Indiana and Michigan transactions, including but not limited to:
- state-specific requirements for deed preparation and recording
- property transfer and conveyance rules
- mortgage and lien priorities
- closing and escrow compliance
- state real estate licensing and title insurance regulations

- Underwrite title files in accordance with Indiana and Michigan title insurance standards and underwriting guidelines, assessing risk, exceptions, and endorsements with professionalism and integrity.
- Review and advise on claims arising in Indiana and Michigan, evaluating coverage, risk, and potential resolutions while demonstrating care for clients, lenders, and the company and ensuring fair outcomes.
- Provide guidance and support on state-specific compliance, including:
- Indiana’s land title standards and statutory requirements
- Michigan’s real property and title statutes
- state recording requirements and county-specific practices
- RESPA and other federal regulations as applicable
- Train and mentor staff on Indiana and Michigan legal and regulatory differences, ensuring the team understands state-specific requirements and consistently applies them with accuracy, respect, and professionalism.
- Identify process improvements and recommend updates to policies, procedures, and workflows to better serve clients and reduce risk, demonstrating a commitment to do better.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active bar membership in Indiana and/or Michigan (or eligibility and willingness to become licensed)
- Strong knowledge of Indiana and Michigan real estate law, title insurance practices, and closing processes
- Experience with underwriting and title-related legal issues in Indiana and/or Michigan preferred
- Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills
- Strong ethical judgment and decision-making rooted in honesty and integrity
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments while maintaining professionalism and respect for others
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while staying organized and accountable
Computer and Office Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and title/escrow software
- Ability to use standard office equipment, including computer, scanner, printer/copier, and telephone
Education and Experience
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Active bar membership in Indiana and/or Michigan (preferred)
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in real estate law, title insurance, underwriting, or claims (preferred)
- Prior title company experience is a strong plus
