The Met, founded by the non-profit Big Picture Learning, began in 1996 as a groundbreaking new school with a student-teacher ratio of 16:1, high standards and strong family engagement. With more than 25 years of success, the Met has expanded to a network of six small high schools throughout the state of Rhode Island. The Met empowers its students to take charge of their learning, become responsible citizens and life-long learners. Met milestones include internships, individual learning plans, advisories, and a breakthrough college transition program.

Position: Bus Driver
Department: Transportation
Reports to: Director of Transportation
Start Date: Immediately
Hourly Range: $16.50 per hour, maximum of 29 hours per week, plus an additional $35/biweekly pay period

Position Description:
Met bus drivers provide transportation for high school students to internship sites, field trips, and various school-related activities as well as transportation to and from school for some students; and ensures the vehicles are in safe operating condition.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Include:

  • Obey all traffic laws and Met transportation practices
  • Must put passengers’ safety first
  • Ensures that the bus can be operated safely before driving and conducts pre-trip safety inspections - checking operating systems to include brakes, horn, lights, emergency flashers, and door-opening devices
  • Returns the bus to the designated lot, performs a final inspection and secures the bus according to procedures
  • Checks with Director of Transportation for any changes in normal routes or new student passengers
  • Transport students to internship sites within a prescribed route in accordance with time schedules
  • Transport students and staff on trips and activities as needed
  • Participates in all required driver training programs
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating conditions
  • Reports all accidents immediately, requesting police or ambulance services as needed; complete required accident reports
  • Reports student incidents to communicate information to appropriate Met staff
  • Work with the Director of Transportation for the care and upkeep of your assigned vehicle
  • Maintain all receipts for Met issued gas card

Job Schedule:

  • Hours available from September - June, with possible hours of summer work available
  • Workdays are Mondays - Fridays, with some possible weekend work available
  • Up to 29 hours per week; hours may vary daily and week
  • Driver must be available to work early hours and late hours as required

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Rhode Island Chauffeurs’ License required
  • Proof of good driving record
  • Personal relation skills; ability to positively interact with students and staff on a daily basis
  • Ability to take and read directions
  • Must be alcohol and drug-free
  • Subject to a nationwide fingerprint background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CDL preferred
  • Professional driving experience preferred
