What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lactation Consultant position at Metropolitan Pediatrics, LLC?
This position is eligible for our $1000 sign on bonus.
The Lactation Consultant provides assessment, assistance, and support of infant nutrition, particularly breastfeeding, to infants, adult and adolescent mothers, and families. The Specialist provides education to staff and providers, as well as to the community. The Specialist collaborates closely with providers and staff promoting collaboration and communication. The Lactation Consultant participates effectively in the daily operations of health care needs.
Essential Functions
- Provides consultations to mothers and neonates as directed by
- provider referral or self-referral. Consultations may include but are not limited to:
- Breastfeeding guidance and support.
- Breast pump usage and maintenance, education, and guidance as appropriate.
- Supplementation education and guidance as appropriate.
- Provides counseling for maternal issues related to breasts and nipples as needed.
- Develops a comprehensive feeding plan consistent with current evidence-based practice as appropriate.
- Facilitates formal and informal learning for patient/families, nursing, other members of the healthcare team, and community.
- Practices within the scope of the International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) guidelines
- Engages in ongoing professional development and maintains their IBCLC certification.
- Builds rapport with patients and provides reassurance.
- Successfully works in a fast-paced, changing environment with effective time management, ability to multitask and prioritize workload to see an appropriate number of referred patients per day.
- Participate in site-specific and clinic-wide initiatives on an ongoing basis.
- Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related goals and results as needed.
- Attend and actively participates in huddles and team meetings, remote or in clinic as needed.
- Display high standards of office conduct.
- Punctual, regular, timely, and dependable attendance.
Secondary Functions

Job Scope
Performs duties with minimal supervision, operating from established and well-known procedures. Decisions are based on regular and recurring work situations. Mistakes and/or errors may result in directly affecting patient care, disrupting scheduled patient flow, holding up insurance billing, causing poor patient relations, and/or damage to patient care services, all of which can have negative financial implications for the organization
Job Conditions
Working conditions include working with others in a team setting and frequent interruptions. Other working conditions include direct patient care, phone, and computer work.
Interpersonal Contacts
This position has both internal and external contacts. The most common internal contacts are with own site providers and staff and supervisor. The most frequent external contacts are with patients and families. Both types of interactions involve information exchange and extensive problem solving. Most of the contact with external customers takes place with direct patient care.
Education/ Experience
- Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required.
- 3 years experience providing lactation care preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Understanding of clinic workflow required.
- Experience with Electronic Medical Records.
