The Transit Police Department is one of the fastest growing law enforcement agencies in the state due the expansion of light rail and Rapid Transit Bus systems. There is an authorized strength of 171 full-time officers, 80 part-time officers, 55 community service officers and 40 administrative staff dedicated to one thing: public safety on and near our transit system.
How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:
The Police Evidence Supervisor is responsible for the supervision and management of the Property and Evidence Unit and Body-Worn Camera/Digital Video Program. This includes oversight of physical and digital evidence intake, storage, and disposal, maintaining chain of custody, supporting court-related evidence needs, managing body worn camera and fleet video systems, and ensuring compliance with laws and department policy related to digital and physical evidence.
What you would do in this job:
- Manage intake, documentation, storage, return, and lawful disposal of physical and digital evidence.
- Ensure chain of custody integrity and compliance with legal standards throughout the evidence lifecycle.
- Oversee the department’s Body-Worn Camera (BWC) program, including video collection, redaction, and system maintenance.
- Coordinate submission of evidence for court and BCA testing and oversee training for proper evidence handling.
- Conduct audits and ensure safety, security, and compliance in handling evidence, including hazardous materials.
- Plan, organize, lead and delegate work activities, establish priorities, monitor progress, and evaluate staff performance.
- Supervise personnel: delegate tasks, assign priorities, manage schedules to ensure coverage.
- Identify, recommend, and implement operational procedures for improved efficiency and effectiveness.
- Establish work standards and goals; conduct performance evaluations.
- Provide training and development for staff, ensure cross-training across units.
- Review leave requests, approve biweekly timecards, and prepare reports.
- Ensure all business processes, policies, systems, and applications comply with federal, state, and local laws.
- Oversee technology-related projects, including testing prior to upgrades and systems maintenance.
- Assess workflows, consult with vendors, and recommend enhancements to improve systems.
- Ensure accurate and timely data delivery to support department needs.
- Ensure security, confidentiality, availability, and lifecycle management of physical and digital information.
- Conduct audits to ensure chain of custody, data accuracy, and compliance.
- Complete onboarding process for both sworn and civilian staff, standardizing technology and access based on job function.
Minimum qualifications:
Any of the following combinations of experience working in law enforcement, or similar government position, with police evidence (physical and digital), system technology, project management, data practices and process improvement, or related, and completed education in Business Administration, Information Technology, Project Management, Law Enforcement, or closely related field.
- High school diploma/GED with eight (8) years of experience, including one (1) year of supervision, lead work, or providing work direction to other employees.
- Associates degree with six (6) years of experience, including one (1) year of supervision, lead work, or providing work direction to other employees.
- Bachelor’s degree, or higher, with four (4) year of experience, including one (1) year of supervision, lead work, or providing work direction to other employees.
Valid driver's license with acceptable record is required.
