Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the EMS Director, field lieutenants conduct and supervise the delivery of skilled emergency and non-emergency services in a variety of areas, including emergency medical operations, mentoring, training, quality improvement, education, agency coordination, and other duties as required. This position serves as the field officer in charge of a group of subordinates in the field setting. Incumbents may be assigned to specialty positions, including vehicle management, equipment management, medical supply management, and daily field audits. Incumbents may be required to stand duty in the place of a field captain when the field captain is out.

 Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED
  • Minimum of Six Months in the field of EMS health care 
  • Certified as a Colorado State EMS Provider with IV
  • Must be eligible to function as an emergency medical vehicle operator in accordance with Colorado Regulations and City/Departmental
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving history.
  • Maintain Colorado Certification Emergency Medical Technician- Basic with IV
  • Must maintain AHA Certification for CPR /BLS

 Job Requirements:

This is a Front- End position working Sunday-Tuesday and every other Wednesday.

  •  Must have reasonable scheduling flexibility to rotate with agency needs.
  • May be assigned to supervisory specialty positions, including, but not limited to equipment management , supply warehousing, vehicle management, and/or training.
  • Successful completion of a field training program resulting in release to function as an EMT-B IV under general supervision within 30 days of initial orientation, including required endorsement by the Agency Medical Director. These training times are approximate.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including termination.
  • Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned and can vary based on day-day operations. This list is not an all- inclusive list.
  • Must maintain professional certificates and affiliations as determined by the agency.

 

Reports To:

Reports directly to EMS Director

Works closely and coordinates with other EMS Field Training Officers and Field Lieutenants.

Responsibilities:

The Field Lieutenant, in addition to the normal duties of the provider’s certification level, assists in development and training of field personnel, agency development as well as daily supervisory tasks for day-to-day field operations. 

*Note: Safety Sensitive position requires random drug testing.

 These responsibilities include (but not limited to) activities such as:

  • Assist the training division with training new employees.

 

  • Ensures all personnel are conducting proper operation of the apparatus to/from

 

  • Inspects assigned stations and vehicles on a frequent basis and assigns work in areas needing improvement to ensure operational

 

  • Ensures equipment such as AED’s, ePCR devices, Communications equipment, etc. are properly trained and maintained

 

  • Coordinate with members to ensure they have proper equipment and uniforms required for shift.

 

  • Assist in training personnel in becoming familiar with new apparatus

 

  • Assists in development of training protocols and procedures to continuously support EMS Operations.

  

  • Communicates with other officers to make recommendations for improvement.

 

  • Participates in regular staff meetings and provides input relative to EMS

 

  • During departmental EMS training activities, consults with supervisor and other department personnel to review activities, resolve problems, provide recommendations, or receive advice/direction in regard to continuing education and training.

 

  • Ensures departmental compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures; and recommends any actions necessary to correct deviations or

 

  • Performs a variety of office-related functions, including receiving telephone calls, typing, filing reports, correspondence, and responding to inquiries from crews. The employee may be assigned special details or reports that require independent research and

 

  • Observes the performance of EMT's and Paramedics and keeps the Training Division apprised of all concerns regarding quality improvement and patient care

 

  • Display a positive, self-motivated professional demeanor and promotes the mission of Metro Care Ambulance as a unified

 

  • Provides immediate redirection when patient care concerns are identified, witnessed, or

 

  • Participates in call critiques with subordinate crews and records individual participation, and delegates work assignments and ensures adequate

 

  • Instructs and/or monitors on-duty in-service training daily and assists the Training Division with coordination of class material and assists with the orientation of new

 

  • While assigned to Field Operations, assumes responsibility to respond to critical incidents when dispatched; always remains in radio contact; monitors the communications of other Field units and supports where needed.

 

  • While assigned to Training and Quality Improvement, supervises and or conducts the orientation and in-service training of new employees; monitors the progress of new employees during the probationary period; submits written reports as required; assists in continuing medical education programs offered by the Department.
