Job Summary

Position is responsible for assisting teachers in providing for the special needs of students in order to achieve their academic and social potential.

Essential Duties

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities, who are otherwise qualified, to perform the duties herein described.

  1. Supports the teacher in special education classes with all aspects of the day, including instruction, reviews, and behavior interventions.
  2. Ensures compliance with assignments and extracurricular duties outlined by the teacher and/or principal.
  3. Assists the teacher in implementing daily and long-range lesson plans; provides instructional support and remediation during academic lessons and various activities.
  4. Provides functional support with daily life skills.
  5. Assists the teacher in the preparation of classroom and instructional materials.
  6. Monitors students in the classroom and provides coverage when the teacher is away.
  7. Assumes a fair share of the classroom duties as outlined by the classroom teacher.
  8. Monitors classroom behaviors, follows behavior plans, and assists students with adaptive behavior skills.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • ParaPro Certification.
  • At least one (1) year of successful work experience.
  • Previous experience working with special education students preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to comply with contracted work hour schedules.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with all school board policies and State laws relative to special education classroom operations.
  • Ability to plan and utilize time effectively.
  • Exhibits the necessary physical, mental, and emotional abilities to execute duties as outlined by the teacher and principal.
  • Exhibits good character and leadership qualities.
  • Ability to work with special education students.
  • Have good physical and emotional health.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment.  Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
