Job Summary
The position is responsible for monitoring students in an alternative education classroom while establishing and maintaining a calm educational atmosphere.
Essential Duties

- Monitors students assigned to alternative education and assists with instructional activities such as:
- Reading
- Writing
- Locating and utilizing educational materials
- Understanding and following directions and rules
- Encouraging students to work independently
- Helping students with various subject areas to complete work assigned by a classroom teacher
- Reinforcing skills taught by the classroom teacher, assisting individual students with special assignments, and addressing academic problems
- Monitors halls during class changes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Successful test results on the ParaPro Assessment are preferred.
- Previous experience working with students preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrates basic reading, writing, and computation skills.
- Have good physical and emotional health.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.

Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
