The physician assistant first assist practices medicine under the supervision of a physician. The role is unique to the Physician Assistants specialty area in Surgical Oncology. Provides direct patient care and assumes primary responsibility for clinical management of patients in ambulatory, operating room and inpatient settings. Collaborates, refers, and consults with department attending physicians, specialists, and other members of the health care team to deliver effective, efficient, safe, and high-quality care. What You Will Do
- Provides diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical, and preventative care under the supervision of a physician. Functions primarily as a first assistant during cardiovascular and thoracic operative procedures.
- Clinical Practice Expert: Provides advanced level of direct and indirect care to individual patients/families and/or groups of patients/families in collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary team members.
- Evidence-Based Consultant & Researcher: Demonstrates collaborative leadership with researchers, other health professionals, divisions, and departments to generate knowledge and make practice changes based on research findings, as well as, the results of the organizational and departmental quality improvement processes.
- Clinical Leadership: Provides leadership in meeting system, organizational, division, and departmental goals.
- Demonstrates accountability for professional responsibilities and self-development.
- Required - Master's Degree Physician Assistant
- Required - Physician Assistant 1-3 years
- Required - Licensed Physician Assistant Tennessee - Tennessee Board of Physician Assistants
- Required - Physician Assistant-Certified - National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
- Preferred - Licensed Physician Assistant - Mississippi - Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure
- Proficiency in applying advanced concepts, principles, and professional techniques in a specialized field of nursing.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, basic computer skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment with physicians, residents, advanced practice nurses, nurses, department leaders and support staff thereby creating a cohesive well developed team.
- There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.
- Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
- Exposure to excessive heat or cold as required.
- Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
- Frequent travel outside hospital.
- Frequent handling or administering of narcotics.
- Ability to read and write to communicate orally and in writing with other individuals.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. without assistance and push and pull up to 250 lbs.
- Ability to sit in one place, stand, walk, squat, kneel, reach, twist, crawl, and bend throughout the shift.
- Good hand-eye coordination.
