Position Summary

The Community Council Coordinator plays a pivotal role in organizing, facilitating, and supporting community councils across assigned regions. This position advances the Board of Directors’ community outreach initiatives by strengthening relationships, fostering civic participation, and supporting community transformation efforts. The Coordinator engages and mobilizes community members, identifies and develops resident leaders, and ensures council activities align with MHM’s broader goals related to health equity and community well-being. The ideal candidate is passionate about community development, grassroots engagement, and advancing equity across diverse, multicultural communities.

Scope and Impact

This role directly influences community engagement, grassroots leadership development, and the ability of MHM to understand and respond to community needs. The Coordinator strengthens relationships with residents, organizations, and local leaders, helping ensure community voices inform MHM priorities. The position plays a key role in expanding advocacy efforts, advancing health equity goals, and building sustainable engagement practices across the region.

Decision-Making Authority

Operates under general supervision with autonomy to coordinate councils, develop engagement strategies, recruit community members, facilitate meetings, and resolve conflicts. Uses sound judgment to navigate complex interpersonal issues and manage diverse viewpoints. Strategic or high-impact decisions are elevated to leadership.

Interactions / Working Relationships

  • Internal: Partners with leadership, Community Engagement, Communications, Community Impact, clinical/regional teams, and board liaisons.
  • External: Community members, grassroots leaders, nonprofit partners, schools, faith-based organizations, civic groups, and local governments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify and recruit community members, leaders, and stakeholders to participate in community councils.
  • Develop and implement engagement strategies that ensure diverse, equitable, and inclusive representation.
  • Build relationships that support grassroots involvement and community transformation.
  • Support the facilitation of council meetings, discussions, and decision-making processes.
  • Foster an environment where all voices are respected and included.
  • Act as a liaison between community councils and MHM leadership, ensuring concerns and recommendations are communicated effectively.
  • Mediate and resolve conflicts within councils or among members when necessary.
  • Alignment & Collaboration
  • Work closely with internal teams and external partners to align community initiatives with MHM’s strategic goals, vision, and health equity priorities.
  • Support community-led advocacy efforts addressing social and health inequities.
  • Develop strong partnerships with organizations, stakeholders, and grassroots groups.
  • Assessment, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
  • Assist in assessing the impact of council activities; identify areas for improvement.
  • Prepare reports, updates, and progress summaries for leadership and relevant stakeholders.
  • Support strategic initiatives by collecting community insights and synthesizing input for planning and decision-making.
  • Assist with planning and coordinating community meetings, engagement events, advocacy efforts, and board-related outreach.
  • Support community council activities across multiple regions, including scheduling, logistics, and preparation.
  • Maintain documentation, meeting notes, and tracking systems for community interactions.
  • Adjust to changing priorities, objectives, and community needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory or Leadership Responsibilities

This position does not supervise staff but may coordinate activities, facilitate groups, and guide community leaders.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required.
  • Licenses/Certifications: None
  • Experience:
  • At least three (3) years of experience in community engagement, advocacy, organizing, or related work.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating meetings, building relationships, and mobilizing groups for action.
  • Experience working with marginalized communities and addressing health/social inequities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Sciences, Public Health, Community Development, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in community organizing or grassroots leadership development.
  • Conflict mediation skills and experience resolving group dynamics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Strong ability to connect, engage, and mobilize diverse community members.
  • Understanding of social determinants of health, health equity principles, and community organizing.
  • Familiarity with barriers affecting marginalized communities.
  • Public speaking, meeting facilitation, and storytelling skills.
  • Strong collaboration and partnership-building abilities.
  • Event and program coordination skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Forward-thinking and strategic problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to navigate complex challenges and build consensus.

Language Skills

  • Fluent in English.
  • Spanish bilingual highly preferred.
  • Ability to present to diverse audiences and respond to questions effectively.

Technology and Tools

  • Proficiency with Internet, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to use virtual platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
  • Ability to develop presentations, reports, and tracking documents.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Hybrid role with remote work as the primary location.
  • Requires extensive travel (up to 75%) across assigned regions for council meetings, site visits, engagements, and partnerships; may include overnight stays.
  • Requires bending, walking, standing, sitting, twisting, and climbing step stools.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver at least 25 pounds.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license, auto liability insurance, and reliable transportation.
