Position Summary
The Medical Assistant supports providers and clinical teams by preparing patients, performing clinical intake, assisting with examinations and procedures, and delivering patient education. Decision-Making Authority
Decisions are made under the direction of licensed providers, with autonomy in performing routine patient care activities, maintaining documentation, and managing room readiness. Independent judgment is used in prioritizing patient needs and responding to patient inquiries.
Interactions / Working Relationships
- Daily collaboration with providers, nurses, and other clinical team members.
- Frequent interaction with patients and families to provide education and support.
- Communication with public health agencies for required reporting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform and document clinical intake using appropriate terminology and abbreviations to determine patient’s chief complaint.
- Record patient vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, weight, height, etc.).
- Prepare patients for examinations, treatments, or procedures.
- Collect and assist in processing blood, urine, or other bodily samples for laboratory analysis.
- Administer injections, medications, and treatments as directed by provider.
- Set up instruments and equipment for specific procedures.
- Provide patient and family education regarding conditions, treatments, and ongoing care.
- Respond to patient calls and questions; assist with translation during office and telehealth visits.
- Report STDs, communicable diseases, and other required conditions to appropriate agencies.
- Assist in quality assurance checks and maintain exam rooms in a clean and orderly condition.
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies in exam rooms.
- Prepare patients for ambulance transfers as needed.
- Support resolution of patient/client complaints, requests, and inquiries.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory or Leadership Responsibilities
This position does not supervise others.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.
- Experience: One year of experience in a clinical setting required. In lieu of one year’s experience, a combination of medical assistant training and education may be accepted.
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Registered/Certified by one of the following: American Association of Medical Assistants, National Association for Health Care Professionals, or National Healthcare Association – required.
- BCLS certification required.
- Other Requirements: Must be able to drive, have access to a car, maintain a valid driver’s license, and carry auto liability insurance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with electronic health record software.
- Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English

- Ability to follow clinical protocols and carry out instructions accurately.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills with patients and providers.
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities.

Language Skills
- Required: Fluency in English and Spanish.
- Ability to translate between provider and patient/client.
Technology and Tools
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Working knowledge of the Internet and basic software applications.
- Experience with EHR systems preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Medical office setting with direct patient contact.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, kneeling, and crouching.
- May require sitting and standing for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift and maneuver up to 25 pounds.
- Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
