Position Summary

The Superintendent 1 is responsible for overseeing and managing daily jobsite operations on one assigned project of moderate size, or a defined area or phase of a larger project, to ensure work is completed safely, on time, within budget, and according to plans, specifications, and quality standards. This role provides field leadership, directs subcontractor activities, enforces site safety and compliance, coordinates scheduling and logistics, and maintains accurate daily documentation.

Key Responsibilities

Project Planning & Coordination

  • Participate in project setup, mobilization, and site logistics planning.
  • Maintain a two- to three-week look-ahead and supply accurate field input to the master schedule.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager to keep the project schedule current.
  • Coordinate daily with trade partners, inspectors, owners, architects, and suppliers to support workflow.
  • Identify material, equipment, and long-lead needs in time to act on them.

Field Leadership & Supervision

  • Maintain care, custody, and control of the assigned project or area in alignment with company safety culture and standards.
  • Direct subcontractor crews and Metcalf self-perform labor on the assigned work.
  • Ensure work is completed according to project plans, specifications, and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Provide direction to one Assistant Superintendent when assigned and review their work; performance reviews remain with the assigned senior field leader.
  • Onboard new field staff and trade partners to site-specific procedures.

Jobsite Operations

  • Conduct daily jobsite walkthroughs, coordination meetings, and safety inspections.
  • Manage crew sequencing, workforce efficiency, and site logistics on the assigned work.
  • Identify field issues affecting schedule, cost, or quality and escalate them promptly with a recommendation.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, safety logs, manpower tracking, and progress documentation.
  • Track and report field labor and equipment usage accurately every day.
  • Execute the QA/QC checklist and manage punch list, inspections, and close-out activities on the assigned work.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce all OSHA, federal and state regulations, and company safety policies.
  • Lead daily huddles and weekly toolbox talks.
  • Complete inspections, observations, and corrective actions on schedule.
  • Stop unsafe work immediately and correct unsafe behaviors and conditions without delay.
  • Support incident documentation and corrective action processes.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Serve as the on-site point of contact for the assigned scope.
  • Maintain daily contact with the assigned Superintendent 2 or Senior Superintendent; field plans are reviewed before execution.
  • Maintain strong communication with the Project Manager regarding progress, risks, and schedule impacts.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with subcontractors, inspectors, owners, and design teams.

Qualifications

Qualifications, Education & Experience

  • Working understanding of construction means, methods, sequencing, and building systems.
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, submittals, and schedules.
  • Proficient in jobsite documentation and field management software (Procore, Bluebeam, MS Project, CMiC).
  • Familiarity with QA/QC procedures and inspection processes.
  • Ability to direct subcontractor crews and self-perform labor on assigned work.
  • Clear communication, coordination, and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound decision-making and problem-solving, with the judgment to escalate rather than resolve unilaterally.
  • Organization, time management, and accuracy in daily reporting.
  • Ability to adapt to changing jobsite conditions and maintain composure under pressure.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent field experience fully accepted in place of a degree.
  • 5–8 years of construction field experience, with 1–3 years supervising field operations.
  • Experience in commercial or multifamily construction required.
  • OSHA 30 required within 12 months of placement; current CPR/First Aid/AED and a valid driver's license.
  • Qualified as a Competent Person for at least one high-risk activity (excavation, fall protection, or scaffold).

Salary : $110,000 - $135,000
