What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Chemist position at Metals and Additives LLC?
Position Overview
The research chemist will engage in the development of new chemical products and the improvement of current products and processes. Research will focus on inorganic chemistry related to catalysts and adsorbents, battery additives, and polymer additives including flame retardants and smoke suppressants. This role is involved in every stage of product development from initial conception and lab evaluation through scale up and piloting to full-scale manufacturing. The position will report to the VP of Technology and will have significant interaction with the quality, engineering, and production teams.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out independent research on assigned projects including but not limited to literature searches, experimental design, and proper documentation
Regularly communicate research findings and results to the R&D team
Use analytical techniques common for inorganic chemistry including XRD, XRF, ICP-OES, SEM, BET, TGA/DSC, PSD and DLS to characterize products
Develop analytical methods on new products and transfer them to quality control
Interface regularly with the quality department as a technical expert
Provide chemical knowledge and support for manufacturing issues as they arise
Write internal and external reports and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Qualifications
BS or MS in chemistry with 2 years of experience in a lab environment (industrial experience preferred), or PhD in chemistry with 0 years of industrial experience
Strong ability to set up, run, and evaluate chemical reactions
A good understanding of analytical techniques and the ability to develop analytical methods
Preferred but not required familiarity with XRD, XRF, ICP, SEM and BET
Able to work on and balance several projects in various stages at once
Good record keeping skills (most projects span multiple years)
Able to work independently in a collaborative environment
Effective communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences
