Sr. Technical Animator
Summary:
Develop and maintain high fidelity, performant character animation systems in-engine for a First Person Shooter on Meta Quest.
Job Responsibilities:
• Work directly in Unity alongside engineers to develop, tune, and debug IK systems for player and NPC characters
• Implement and iterate on animation state machines, blend trees, and procedural animation systems supporting fluid first-person and third-person VR gameplay
• Manage outsourced Motion Capture shoots end-to-end — planning capture sessions, remote-directing performances, reviewing deliverables, and coordinating pickups with external mocap vendors with the team
• Integrate, clean, and retarget mocap data in-engine, ensuring animations meet the expected quality bar
• Build and maintain animation pipelines and tooling to streamline mocap-to-engine workflows
• Partner with engineers on character systems including locomotion, weapon handling, hit reactions, and procedural IK adjustments
• Collaborate with Art Direction to define animation style, timing, and weight to support immersive visual fidelity and gameplay feel
Skills:
• 5+ years of technical animation experience in game development
• Shipped at least one multiplayer FPS or action title
• Strong proficiency with Unity animation systems (Animator Controller, IK, blend trees)
• Hands-on experience with IK setup, procedural animation, and runtime character systems
• Experience directing and managing motion capture shoots (planning, on-set direction, data cleanup)
• Proficiency with mocap pipelines (MotionBuilder, Maya, or equivalent) and retargeting workflows
• Ability to work embedded with engineering teams on rapid iteration cycles
• Experience with game profiling and optimization techniques
• Experience shipping products with stringent runtime performance constraints, such as complex mobile or 3D applications or games
• VR development experience preferred
Education/Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in relevant field or equivalent work experience required
