What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corporate Legal Counsel position at META-XIII?
General Counsel / Legal Counsel (Early-Stage, Fractional / Advisory)
META-XIII is an early-stage company building durable infrastructure for peer-based mental wellness in higher education. We are pre-revenue and pre-raise, intentionally laying legal and governance foundations before institutional capital arrives.
We are opening a General Counsel / Legal Counsel role for an experienced attorney who understands early startup constraints, deferred compensation structures, and how investors evaluate legal readiness.
This is a strategic role, not a transactional one.
- Trademark and IP protection strategy during pre-funding stages
- Corporate structure, governance hygiene, and board readiness
- Legal risk framing across product, data, and partnerships (mental health, education, tech)
- Preparing the company for investor diligence without premature over-build
- Advising founders on what is material now vs. post-funding
- Senior attorney, General Counsel, or experienced legal advisor
- Comfortable advising early-stage startups without immediate cash compensation
- Strong judgment around staged legal development and proportional risk
- Able to communicate clearly with founders and investors
- Startup, venture, or regulated-tech experience preferred
- Fractional / advisory engagement
- Equity or deferred compensation during pre-raise phase
- Cash compensation activates upon Pre-Seed or Seed close (≈$500K institutional funding)
- Role designed to mature with the company post-raise
- Remote and flexible
We believe legal clarity should precede capital—not follow it. This role ensures META-XIII enters fundraising with clean structure, defensible IP, and investor-ready governance.
