What are the responsibilities and job description for the Barback position at Mess Hall?
Job Overview
We are seeking a hardworking and fast-moving BARBACK to join our team! This role is the backbone of the bar—keeping everything stocked, clean, and running smoothly so bartenders can focus on service. You’ll play a critical part in maintaining speed and efficiency in a high-volume environment, especially during busy nights and events.
This is a hands-on, physically active position that requires urgency, attention to detail, and the ability to anticipate what the bar needs before anyone asks. If you like moving, hate standing still, and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, you’ll fit right in.
Duties
- Restock beer, wine, liquor, ice, glassware, and all bar supplies throughout service
- Keep the bar clean, organized, and fully prepped at all times
- Change kegs, refill ice wells, and maintain proper storage of all beverages
- Support bartenders by prepping garnishes, juices, and other bar ingredients
- Collect and wash glassware, ensuring a constant supply during high-volume service
- Remove trash, break down boxes, and keep back-of-house areas clean and safe
- Assist with receiving and organizing deliveries
- Help set up and break down for events, private parties, and busy service periods
- Maintain compliance with health and safety standards at all times
- Move quickly and efficiently during peak hours without cutting corners
Experience
- Previous barback or bar/restaurant experience preferred, but not required—we can teach the right person
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment without slowing down
- Strong work ethic and willingness to take initiative (don’t wait to be told what’s empty)
- Comfortable with physical work: lifting kegs, carrying cases, being on your feet for long shifts
- Team-oriented mindset—you’re there to make the whole bar better, not just your station
- Basic understanding of bar operations is a plus, but not mandatory
We do a high volume of business and host frequent events, so be ready to hustle. This is not a stand-around job.
If you’re reliable, quick, and want to get your foot in the door behind the bar, this is how you do it.
