Position Summary

The Plant Superintendent position will assist the Plant Manager in leading all activities for plant operations for the Osceola, AR facility, with overall responsibilities for production safety, first time quality, productivity, employee relations and morale, facilities and equipment maintenance, people development, and other related activities.

The ideal candidate is a well-rounded leader who understands effective techniques for developing stable, high performing manufacturing processes in metals manufacturing or structural steel fabrication.

This is a full-time position that will require an average of approximately 50-55 hours per week. This role will serve as the primary contact for outside vendors and may receive phone calls outside of the normally scheduled workday (fire alarms, railway derailments, security issues, etc.) that could require immediate attention. While weekend work is not common, it may be required to meet production demands.

Periodic travel to other Merrill production sites may occur on a very limited basis.

  • Decision-Making – This person must work collaboratively with Human Resources, Supervisors, and plant employees to gather information and make good decisions. It is important this person knows when immediate decisions must be made and when they should be delayed to gather more information.
  • Results Oriented – This person must be able to connect the dots of how people, processes, and systems come together for results. Some gains are realized in the short-term, and some take longer before they are visible, but all actions must be intentional and relate to long-term business success.
  • Professionalism – This person must present him or herself well, exhibit a positive attitude, and be able to earn and hold the confidence and trust of fellow coworkers.
  • Customer Oriented – This person must be highly conscientious and responsive to the schedules, priorities, and overall needs of customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and direct production operations to include but not limited to: Forklift, Python Operator, Fab/Blast, Paint Cell/Touch-up, Loading, Yard, and Material Handling.
  • Insure a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.
  • Spend a majority (80%) of the time leading on the shop floor.
  • Direct and manage plant operations for safety, quality, production, maintenance, shipping, and receiving.
  • Coordinate plant activities through the planning with departmental Supervisors to ensure all manufacturing objectives are accomplished in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Implement cost effective systems of control for capital, operating expenditures, manpower, wages, and salaries.
  • Establish and monitor overall plant performance for production and quality standards.
  • Develop and manage production and maintenance schedules to meet internal volume, cost and quality goals
  • Manage plant facilities and equipment. Recommend changes and/or improvements to increase safety, productivity, and quality as needed.
  • Provide development through daily interaction with different levels of employees on all shifts.
  • Implement and maintain preventative maintenance programs.
  • Develop and espouse clear housekeeping procedures.
  • Provide overall direction, development, and leadership to all employees.
  • Utilize operational metrics to analyze productivity, identify issues and achieve production goals.
  • Troubleshoot operational, material, equipment and staffing problems and coordinate solutions.
  • Ability to direct, motivate, and help assist in training teammates and aid in the growth of their performance and complete performance reviews.
  • Help with Safety Accident investigation, Lock-Out/Tag-Out & Accountability.

Education & Experience

  • Machine Operation experience knowledge required.

High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.

Skills, Abilities, and Experience

  • Knowledge of AISC and AWS emphasizing MCAW and FCAW procedures/requirements preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in safety and maintenance operations.
  • Ability to adjust settings and change consumables on machines preferred.
  • Ability to run each machine or knowledge of each machine preferred.
  • Ability to run Fiix.
  • Supervisory experience with leading Supervisors and large groups of people.
  • At least 8 years of experience in a manufacturing environment in a related industry preferred.
