What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-Time Legal Assistant – Special Education Law (Project-Based) ideal for paralegal or law student position at Merrick Family?
Part-Time Legal Assistant – Special Education Law (Project-Based) ideal for paralegal or law student NOT remote
Seeking a bright, high-achieving law student, paralegal, or paralegal-in-training to assist with compiling a special education case.
The ideal candidate has some familiarity with special education law and understands the goal of building a strong, well-documented case record. Motivated fast learners will also be considered, but must be willing to spend adequate time independently researching relevant law and procedures if you are not familiar. The job requires this knowledge.
Applicants must have excellent organizational ability, strong document search skills, attention to detail, strong academic performance, and be reliable and efficient. The ability to identify and highlight potential IDEA violations and other problematic issues within records is particularly important. Candidates should be comfortable reading lengthy records carefully, extracting legally relevant facts, and spotting procedural or substantive IDEA issues. Strong analytical reading and issue-spotting skills are essential.
Due to the private nature of the work, this position will be in person (not remote).
Responsibilities
Organize and structure legal documents, emails, reports, and records
Create clear timelines and indexed evidence files
Identify and flag potential IDEA violations or procedural issues in the record
Add an additional layer of organization to materials that are already compiled
Details
Pay: $25/hour
Estimated time: Approximately 20–25 hours initially
Scheduling: Flexible, but the work will need to be completed over a relatively short period of few weeks
The ideal candidate will also be willing to complete one very brief assignment as part of the screening process to determine whether the role is a good fit.
This role offers hands-on exposure to special education law and legal case preparation and would be a strong addition to a law student or paralegal resume.
The material that will be used is already organized in folders but requires a deeper organization. You will not be required to do the first layer of organization.
