Essential Responsibilities
- Deliver rigorous, standards-aligned instruction in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies that promotes deep conceptual understanding.
- Design engaging, student-centered lessons that encourage critical thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, and academic discourse.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and scholars performing above or below grade level.
- Analyze formative, interim, and summative assessment data to monitor student progress, identify learning gaps, and plan targeted interventions.
- Create a structured, nurturing, and culturally responsive classroom environment built on high expectations, consistency, and positive relationships.
- Foster scholars' social-emotional development while promoting independence, resilience, and responsible decision-making.
- Utilize technology to enhance instruction and increase student engagement.
- Implement effective classroom management systems that maximize instructional time and create a safe learning environment.
- Collaborate with grade-level teams, instructional coaches, interventionists, and school leaders to improve instructional practice and student outcomes.
- Participate actively in professional learning communities (PLCs), collaborative planning sessions, coaching cycles, and school-based professional development.
- Maintain accurate student records, assessment data, and documentation in accordance with school and state requirements.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, academic goals, and strategies for supporting learning at home.
- Participate in school-wide events, family engagement opportunities, and extracurricular activities that strengthen the Merrick Academy community.
- Reflect on instructional practice through coaching feedback, student performance data, and professional learning opportunities to continuously improve teaching effectiveness.
- Uphold the mission, vision, and core values of Merrick Academy Charter School while serving as a positive role model for scholars and colleagues.
Qualifications
- Valid New York State Childhood Education certification (Grades 1–6 or equivalent).
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
- Experience teaching elementary students, preferably Grades 3–5.
- Strong classroom management and instructional skills.
- Ability to use assessment data to drive instruction.
- Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
- Commitment to continuous professional growth and student success.
