Summary
The Lead Technologist performs functional duties in the pre analytic, analytic, and post analytic phases of the laboratory path of workflow. This role is responsible for oversight of day to day operational functions for the assigned shift, including supervision, quality control compliance, and troubleshooting. The Lead Technologist assists the supervisor with monitoring test results, staff training, and competency assessments. This position complies with CLIA standards listed under 42CFR493.1463 for high complexity general supervisors.
Essential Responsibilities
Education
Bachelor’s degree and successful completion of a Medical Technology program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation CAHEA or equivalent training, education, and experience in the military.
Experience
Minimum of three years of experience in a clinical laboratory required
Licensure and Certification
ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized MT or MLS ASCP or equivalent categorical certification required
Must meet CLIA qualification standards for high complexity testing personnel listed in 42CFR493.1489
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Working knowledge of general laboratory equipment including centrifuges, microscopes, keyboards, LIS, calculators, fax machines, and automated analyzers

Essential Responsibilities
- Be accessible to testing personnel to provide on site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established by the Department Medical Technical Directors or provide alternative backup such as the Medical Director, department supervisor, or shift supervisor
- Provide day to day supervision of high complexity test performance by testing personnel
- Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained
- As delegated by the Medical Technical Director or Department Supervisor, ensure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from established performance specifications
- As delegated by the Medical Technical Director or Department Supervisor, ensure that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly
- As delegated by the Medical Technical Director or Department Supervisor, identify and provide orientation and training to all testing personnel and students
- As delegated by the Medical Technical Director or Department Supervisor, evaluate and document the performance of all individuals responsible for moderate complexity testing
Education
