What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cook position at Meritus Health?
Meritus Health is seeking a dependable and skilled Cook to join our Nutrition Services team. In this role, you will prepare high-quality food for patients, employees, visitors, and others while maintaining a safe, sanitary, and efficient kitchen environment.

- Prepare entrees and related food items according to daily production sheets, menus, and standardized recipes.
- Review upcoming menus, recipes, and production needs to determine appropriate food items and quantities.
- Assemble and prepare regular and modified food products while accurately documenting production information.
- Taste and evaluate products to ensure quality and consistency.
- Follow proper cooking techniques and safely operate appropriate kitchen equipment.
- Handle perishable foods using safe food handling, storage, labeling, dating, and FIFO practices.
- Follow infection control procedures and applicable food safety and sanitation requirements.
- Monitor and document food temperatures during production, holding, service, cooling, and reheating.
- Ensure the quality, appearance, and availability of food items throughout service.
- Coordinate with other cooks and supervisors regarding the appropriate use of leftover food items.
- Communicate concerns related to recipe quality, yield, or food production to leadership.
- Complete cleaning and other activities necessary to maintain a safe and sanitary work environment.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience
- One year of cooking experience required.
- Two years of institutional food service experience preferred.
- Restaurant line cooking experience is a plus.
Certification
- ServSafe certification preferred.
This position requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods and perform frequent physical activity associated with food preparation and kitchen operations, including bending, pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting.
As needed positions are not eligible for benefits and have a set rate of pay. If you work evenings, nights or weekends, you may be eligible for shift differential.
