- Hybrid Position: The role will allow employees to work offsite but will also require onsite work-based business needs.
Overview
The Steel Buyer is responsible for sourcing and purchasing steel products for the company. This role requires a deep understanding of the steel market, including pricing trends, production capacities, and new technologies. The Steel Buyer will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the company's steel requirements are met in a timely and cost-effective manner. The Steel Buyer will also be responsible for all tactical aspects of purchasing including material cost reductions, securing timely delivery, quality products and supplier negotiations.
- Develop and maintain a strong network of steel suppliers to ensure the company has access to high-quality steel products at competitive prices.
- Conduct market research to keep abreast of changes in the global steel market and make recommendations to the Global Steel Commodity Manager.
- Negotiate favorable pricing and terms with suppliers, ensuring the company receives the best value for its steel purchases.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Operations, Supply Chain, and Finance, to ensure the timely delivery of steel products.
- Continuously monitor and evaluate the performance of suppliers, making recommendations for improvements when necessary.
- Develop and implement cost-saving initiatives, negotiating and managing supplier contracts, and ensuring the company receives the best value for its steel purchases.
- Ensure compliance with procurement policies and procedures, including contract management and supplier performance evaluations.
- Manage the ordering process, including preparing purchase orders, tracking deliveries, and reconciling invoices in Oracle ERP System.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Level Degree (Required)
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in procurement and sourcing, with a strong focus on steel products.
- Knowledge of global steel markets and industry trends.
- Excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and procurement software.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Buying experience in steel or metal products
- Knowledge of ORACLE ERP systems would be an asset.
This position is eligible for Cummins-Meritor’s Incentive Compensation Plan, which offers payouts based on company performance.
