Course Description: IB DP Biology Year 1-2This two-year course is designed for students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The curriculum is organized around three unifying themes—unity and diversity, form and function, and interaction and interdependence—which are explored through key biological concepts such as structure and function, equilibrium, universality and diversity, and evolution.
Content includes the study of cells, molecular biology, genetics, ecology, and human physiology, examined through a conceptual and inquiry-based approach.
Students engage in a wide range of qualitative and quantitative laboratory investigations that emphasize experimental design, data collection and analysis, and the evaluation of scientific evidence. Through these experiences, students develop critical-thinking, problem-solving, and research skills while gaining an understanding of the role of evidence in scientific practice.
A central component of the course is the completion of an independent scientific investigation (Internal Assessment), in which students design, conduct, and evaluate their own research in alignment with IB criteria. In addition to ongoing formative and summative assessments, students will complete the IB Biology external examinations at the end of the program. This course prepares students for the expectations of scientific study and supports readiness for university-level coursework in the biological sciences.
