What are the responsibilities and job description for the Gas Chromatography Chemist position at Meridian Analytical Labs, LLC?
Put Your GC Experience to Work — and Grow With Us
Meridian Analytical Labs is more than a testing laboratory. It’s a place where experienced laboratory professionals can use their technical skills, take on meaningful challenges, learn new technologies, and grow their careers while helping clients achieve their environmental monitoring, compliance, and cleanup goals.
We are looking for an experienced Gas Chromatography Laboratory Analyst who enjoys working with instrumentation, solving problems, and producing accurate, defensible analytical data.
This is not an entry-level GC training position. The successful candidate will bring current, real-world experience operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and performing laboratory QC on gas chromatographs. College laboratory experience alone does not meet this requirement.
At Meridian, however, your existing experience is just the beginning. As you become familiar with our methods, instrumentation, and clients, there will be opportunities to expand your technical skills, take on greater responsibility, learn additional analytical methods, and grow with a laboratory that is continually improving.
What You'll Do
Your days will be active, challenging, and varied. You will work with modern laboratory instrumentation while collaborating with other members of our technical team to deliver reliable results to our clients.
Responsibilities include:
- Analyze water, wastewater, and solid environmental samples for organic chemicals using Agilent gas chromatographs equipped with ECD, FID, and/or GC/MS.
- Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot gas chromatographs and associated laboratory equipment.
- Recognize instrument performance issues and take appropriate corrective action.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and help keep instrumentation operating reliably.
- Prepare samples, standards, solutions, reagents, and quality-control samples.
- Collect, review, and interpret analytical data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with laboratory requirements.
- Perform laboratory QC and investigate results that do not meet established acceptance criteria.
- Follow laboratory SOPs, analytical methods, quality systems, and safety procedures.
- Work with laboratory colleagues to identify problems, improve processes, and keep analyses moving.
- Communicate effectively with team members regarding analytical issues, instrument performance, sample status, and priorities.
- Learn new methods, instrumentation, and technologies as the laboratory's capabilities grow.
What We're Looking For
Required:
- Current, real-world experience operating GCs in a commercial or professional laboratory environment.
- Demonstrated experience with GC troubleshooting and routine instrument maintenance.
- Experience performing and evaluating laboratory quality control.
- College-level chemistry coursework or equivalent technical education.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow precise procedures.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems logically and independently.
- Good computer skills for data collection, processing, and review, including Microsoft Office.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to lift up to 45 pounds without assistance or mechanical equipment.
- Ability to meet applicable employment screening requirements and U.S. work authorization requirements.
Preferred:
- Commercial environmental laboratory experience.
- Experience with GC/ECD, GC/FID, and/or GC/MS.
- Experience with environmental organic methods.
- Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Experience reviewing analytical data and laboratory QC.
- Experience troubleshooting chromatography problems such as calibration issues, poor peak shape, carryover, sensitivity problems, or other instrument performance issues.
