What are the responsibilities and job description for the Blow Molding Automation Engineer position at Mergon Moulded Plastics?
We partner with innovators like Tesla, BMW, Xerox, and Abbott to design and manufacture sustainable components for next‑generation vehicles and equipment. Our culture is grounded in curiosity, care, and continuous improvement—and we invest in people and processes so you can do your best work.
A day in this roleYou step into a highly automated blow molding operation where robots and PLCs hum from the night shift. Production is meeting targets, but there’s room to unlock more. You scan OEE dashboards, spot a trend on a cell with an ABB robot and an Omron PLC, and head to the floor. Within minutes, you’re shoulder‑to‑shoulder with Production and Maintenance, isolating the fault, optimizing the sequence, and shaving valuable minutes off cycle time. Later, you fine‑tune a newly commissioned automation cell, coach a teammate on a troubleshooting technique, and review a plan to pilot a new technology with a supplier partner. When an urgent issue pops up after hours, you jump in so the line stays on track.
What you will do- Master the operation and upkeep of ABB robots, Omron PLCs, and related automation used in blow molding.
- Partner with Production and Maintenance to diagnose and resolve issues that impact OEE.
- Lead reliability and performance upgrades across automation assets to keep production smooth.
- Support commissioning, installation, and precise tuning of automation systems for peak efficiency.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, suppliers, and specialists to introduce new tech, solve tough problems, and drive process gains.
- Pursue reliability improvements that cut downtime and lift throughput across the plant.
- Provide hands‑on training and technical support to colleagues to spread best practices.
- Stay current on robotics, PLC programming, and broader automation advances.
- Be available for overtime and periodic weekend work to address urgent needs and hit production goals.
- Notable OEE gains, especially via reduced downtime on robotic and PLC‑driven equipment.
- Rapid adoption of new technologies that shortens troubleshooting time and boosts efficiency.
- Tangible process optimizations that deliver performance improvements and cost savings.
- Fewer and shorter equipment breakdowns enabled by proactive maintenance and problem solving.
You will make decisions that affect automation troubleshooting, equipment enhancements, and OEE improvement initiatives. Changes that significantly impact capacity or require major investment go to higher management for approval.
What you bring- Strong technical aptitude and eagerness to learn quickly—particularly in robotics, PLCs, and automation.
- A resourceful problem solver who thrives in a fast‑paced production setting and can juggle multiple priorities.
- Background in blow molding or automated manufacturing is advantageous but not required.
- Readiness to work overtime and some weekends to resolve critical production and maintenance issues.
Responsibilities and tasks may evolve; additional duties can be assigned as needed by your immediate supervisor.
