Description
- Proficient in the procurement of blood samples via venous and capillary techniques, from patients ranging in age from infant to geriatric.
- Utilizes use of the Laboratory Information System for activating, ordering, and resulting laboratory orders from providers and to result laboratory tests.
- Educates patients in the proper collection of specimens such as urine, stool and sputum.
- Reviews orders from providers, maintaining accuracy in ordering tests; occasionally must call providers' offices to obtain orders.
- Processes specimens in the appropriate way, including looking up specimen requirements, centrifuging and separating as necessary, and storing at the appropriate temperature to maintain sample integrity and testing acceptability.
- Readies specimens for transfer to reference laboratories, including completing the required paperwork for transfer and ensuring STAT specimens are processed and transported in a timely manner, including calling a STAT courier and completing the necessary paperwork for the transfer.
- Performs both waived and moderately complex CLIA testing in hematology, urinalysis, and serologiy areas under the guidance and supervision of an MLT or MT.
- Keeps accurate records, such as temperature monitoring, quality control for all laboratory testing and daily, weekly and monthly maintenance.
- Education: High school plus additional course work up to 1 year
- Training Preferred: Medical Assistant, Certified Phlebotomist, or other healthcare studies
- Experience: Less than 1 year experience required.
