Mercury Sound and Lighting
Location: [Detroit, MI]
Employment Type: [Full-Time]
Compensation: [$20 - $25]
Great events start with people who care.
Mercury Sound and Lighting is seeking an Audio Visual Technician to support meetings and events at one of our partner properties. We’re looking for someone who enjoys technology, takes pride in their work, and understands how to make clients and guests feel taken care of.
Mercury provides live event production, in-house event technology services, and audiovisual integration. Our reputation is built on dependable people, thoughtful service, and confident execution. In this position, you’ll represent Mercury every day while helping our venue partner deliver an exceptional event experience.
The Role
You’ll be a familiar, trusted resource for property staff, event planners, and presenters. You’ll handle the preparation, setup, operation, and breakdown of audiovisual systems for meetings and events, with a focus on technical quality and attentive service.
Working with Mercury’s property leadership and operations team, you’ll help keep events on schedule, respond to changing needs, and ensure clients feel supported from their first equipment check through the end of their program.
This is a hands-on position that combines technical ability, hospitality, and personal ownership.
What You’ll Do
Event Preparation and Equipment Operation
- Review event orders, equipment lists, and room layouts to understand each event’s requirements.
- Set up, test, operate, and break down sound systems, microphones, projectors, displays, presentation equipment, and event lighting.
- Complete equipment checks before clients arrive, allowing time to address issues and confirm the room is ready.
- Help presenters connect laptops, test audio and video playback, and become comfortable with the equipment.
- Coordinate room changes and equipment needs with Mercury teammates, property staff, and outside vendors.
- Maintain clean, organized equipment storage and professional-looking setups with safe cable routing.
Client Service and Property Relationships
- Welcome clients and presenters, confirm their needs, and explain equipment operation in clear, approachable language.
- Check in throughout the day and remain accessible when support is needed.
- Anticipate needs, follow through on requests, and communicate changes promptly.
- Build productive relationships with the property’s sales, catering, banquet, and operations teams.
- Represent both Mercury and the property with courtesy, discretion, and a service-first attitude.
Technical Support and Problem Solving
- Troubleshoot equipment, signal flow, connectivity, and presentation software issues.
- Respond calmly to last-minute changes and technical challenges.
- Take ownership of problems through resolution and involve additional support when needed.
- Report damaged or unreliable equipment and help keep systems ready for the next event.
- Follow safe equipment-handling practices and property procedures.
Event Documentation and Business Support
- Keep event records, equipment assignments, and service notes accurate and current.
- Document client-approved additions and changes so orders and billing reflect the services delivered.
- Recognize when an additional service or piece of equipment would improve the event, and coordinate recommendations with Mercury’s sales or property leadership.
- Assist with order updates and invoice review as assigned.
- Follow Mercury’s procedures for equipment tracking, timekeeping, and event reporting.

What You Bring
- Two or more years of AV or related event experience preferred.
- Practical knowledge of microphones, sound systems, projectors, displays, presentation equipment, and basic stage lighting systems.

- Clear communication, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- The ability to work independently while coordinating closely with a team.
- A willingness to learn new equipment and complete training relevant to your responsibilities.
- A valid driver’s license if assigned to operate a company vehicle.
We value both technical knowledge and attitude. If you have a solid foundation, a service mindset, and a desire to grow, we encourage you to apply.
Schedule and Work Environment
This position works on-site at a partner property, with occasional support at other Mercury locations or events as needed. Hours follow the event calendar and may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Work takes place in meeting rooms, ballrooms, storage areas, and loading areas, with varying noise levels and activity. Professional appearance and adherence to Mercury’s and the property’s dress standards are expected.
The role involves standing and walking for extended periods; bending, kneeling, and reaching; moving equipment carts; and lifting or carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Larger or heavier items must be handled with appropriate assistance or equipment. Some assignments may involve ladders or lifts, subject to training and authorization.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to support performance of the position’s essential functions.
Why Mercury?
Your work will have a visible impact on the events you support and the relationships we build. You’ll work across a variety of event formats, develop your technical skills, and contribute to a team that values how you treat people as much as how you handle equipment.
We’re looking for someone who takes pride in a room that’s ready, a presenter who feels confident, and a client who knows they’re in good hands.
