Job Overview
The Maintenance & Engineering Manager provides overall leadership and accountability for maintenance, engineering, reliability, and automation across plant operations. This role is responsible for leading all maintenance personnel, managing engineering spares, maintaining reliability systems, and establishing technical standards.
This position also oversees project engineering for new and upgraded assets, ensures facility compliance, manages departmental budgets, and serves as the technical authority for electrical systems, automation, and industrial controls supporting 24/7 operations.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and develop a high-performing Maintenance & Engineering team focused on safety, reliability, and operational excellence
- Drive a zero-harm safety culture while maximizing equipment uptime and production efficiency
- Own maintenance, engineering, reliability, and automation strategies for the facility
- Promote continuous improvement, standardized engineering practices, and disciplined maintenance systems
Maintenance & Reliability
- Provide direct leadership of maintenance personnel, including hiring, training, performance management, and development
- Plan and execute preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs to minimize downtime
- Implement and sustain reliability methodologies, including:
- Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM)
- Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
- Asset Management (ISO 55000)
- Monitor equipment performance, analyze trends, and identify improvement opportunities
- Manage spare parts inventory and maintenance supplies to balance availability and cost control
- Strengthen maintenance systems, ensuring effective root cause analysis and corrective actions
Engineering & Technical Expertise
- Serve as the technical authority on electrical systems, automation, PLCs, HMIs, motion control, and industrial controls
- Standardize engineering and automation design principles across the organization
- Review and approve engineering designs, drawings, and specifications
- Partner cross-functionally to implement new technologies and enhance manufacturing capabilities
- Support product and process development through engineering expertise
Project Engineering
- Lead all engineering projects from concept through completion, including capital and improvement initiatives
- Develop project scope, budgets, timelines, and resource plans
- Coordinate with production, quality, safety, and external vendors
- Track project progress, mitigate risks, and ensure successful execution
- Communicate status updates effectively with stakeholders
- Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and quality standards
Facilities, Compliance & Budget Management
- Oversee facility operations to ensure compliance with regulatory, safety, and environmental requirements
- Ensure adherence to OSHA and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations
- Manage the Maintenance & Engineering budget (labor, parts, services, and capital)
- Support overall plant performance objectives and operational planning
- Maintain ISO-related initiatives, including documentation, SOPs, PM programs, and calibration systems
Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
- Lead root cause analysis and structured problem-solving initiatives
- Drive process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve reliability
- Partner with Production to maximize output without compromising safety or quality
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement
- Perform additional duties as assigned
QualificationsRequired
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or related discipline), or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 7 years of maintenance and/or engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
- Proven leadership or management experience
- Strong knowledge of:
- Industrial automation
- PLCs and HMIs
- Motion control systems
- Electrical systems
- Experience with reliability programs (TPM, RCM, Asset Management)
- Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills
Preferred
- Experience in tissue, paper, or converting operations
