Nature of Work

The Mercer County Health Department is seeking an additional provider who under general direction, performs professional full‑performance level work providing comprehensive medical care within a general medicine practice. The Medical Provider (physician, physician assistant, and/or nurse practitioner) conducts physical and, when indicated, neurological examinations; obtains and evaluates medical histories; and manages patients across the continuum of care. Diagnoses illnesses, develops treatment plans, and directs nurses, aides, and other staff in the care and treatment of patients, consistent with licensure, certification, and privileging. Prescribes medications and other treatments in accordance with applicable regulations and may testify as an expert witness regarding the physical and medical state of the patient, as permitted by credentialing and scope of practice. Work may be performed in county health departments, schools, correctional infirmaries, state hospitals, rehabilitation centers, or other approved clinical settings. Performs related work as required.

Examples of Work

· Performs comprehensive and problem‑focused physical examinations, obtains medical histories, makes rounds, and documents findings; writes progress notes and reports on patients.

· Communicates with patients and families, explaining the nature of illnesses, diagnostic findings, treatment options, and prognosis in a clear and compassionate manner.

· Diagnoses physical and, when appropriate, mental health disorders and prescribes or recommends medical treatment consistent with evidence‑based practice and scope of licensure.

· Consults with other professional medical staff (including physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, behavioral health, and ancillary services) regarding treatment plans and opportunities to improve the medical program.

· Prescribes and/or directs various therapeutic activities and interventions, including pharmacologic, rehabilitative, and preventive services, in collaboration with the care team.

· Reviews medical evidence and clinical documentation to determine eligibility for treatment and benefits and to support programmatic decisions.

· Promotes good health practices through patient and community education and advises local personnel on health problems, prevention strategies, and available resources.

· Responds to urgent and emergency calls within assigned institutions or facilities and provides appropriate triage, stabilization, and referral.

· May establish, develop, and participate in new clinics or programs designed to address identified community or institutional health needs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Knowledge of current standards and practices in the field of general medicine, including common acute and chronic conditions, and, as applicable, relevant subspecialty areas.

· Knowledge of community health principles, including the impact of economics, social determinants of health, and population‑based health problems on patient care.

· Knowledge of organizational functions and challenges related to program development, administration, supervision, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

· Knowledge of principles and practices of preventive medicine, public health, and medical jurisprudence, including documentation and expert testimony.

· Skill in building effective working relationships with individuals in medical and related professions and with patients and families from diverse backgrounds.

· Ability to interpret and communicate medical policies, practices, and procedures to staff, patients, families, and the general public.

· Ability to plan and execute work effectively, prioritize multiple clinical demands, maintain accurate records, and prepare required professional and technical reports.

· Ability to evaluate medical situations rapidly and make appropriate decisions concerning diagnosis, treatment, and referral.

· Ability to examine and diagnose patients and to prescribe and/or administer necessary treatment within the provider’s licensed and privileged scope of practice.

Minimum Qualifications

Training

· Physician: Graduation from an accredited American or foreign medical school.

· Physician Assistant: Graduation from an accredited physician assistant program (master’s degree or equivalent).

· Nurse Practitioner: Graduation from an accredited nursing program with completion of an advanced practice nursing degree (e.g., MSN, DNP) and appropriate nurse practitioner track.

Experience

Physician:

· One year of internship or residency at an American or Canadian hospital for those holding a degree from an American or Canadian medical school.

· Three years of internship or residency at an American or Canadian hospital for those holding a degree from a foreign medical school.

Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner:

· Clinical experience as an advanced practice provider preferred (e.g., one or more years in a relevant clinical setting); highly qualified new graduates may be considered depending on program needs.

Licensure / Certification

· Current, unrestricted license to practice as a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner in the appropriate jurisdiction.

· Current board certification or board eligibility in the relevant specialty (e.g., family medicine, internal medicine, or applicable PA/NP certification).

· Current DEA registration and any state‑specific prescriptive authority as required for role and setting.

· Additional Requirements (Physicians)

· Physicians must pass the Federation Licensing Examination, the National Boards, or an accepted board examination.

· Foreign‑trained physicians must have a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.
