Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Designs, coordinates, conducts and evaluates epidemiological studies, including determining the methods, areas and extent of investigation and data collection required for the evaluation of disease patterns, environmental hazards, and general conditions of the community; monitors disease trends.
  • Assesses risks of epidemics, communicable diseases, or environmental hazards and provides information and recommendations regarding potential epidemic trends or patters, including causation, and measures for prevention, control and mitigation.
  • Keep apprised of professional, technical and scientific literature and reports relating to communicable disease and environmental epidemiology to keep abreast of developments in the field.
  • Establish and maintain information and surveillance systems to monitor community health status /trends.
  • Evaluates performance and cost effectiveness of public health programs.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, committees, study groups and task forces in the community.
  • Prepares clear and concise epidemiological reports and publications.

Minimum Qualifications

Level I

Experience:

None.

Education:

A graduate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a closely related public health field or a bachelor’s degree in a public health related field and two (2) years of experience in designing and conducting epidemiological studies and interpreting epidemiological or demographic data.

Level II

Experience:

One (1) year of experience designing and conducting epidemiological studies and interpreting epidemiological or demographic data.

Education:

A graduate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a closely related public health field or a bachelor’s degree in a public health related field and two (2) years of experience in designing and conducting epidemiological studies and interpreting epidemiological or demographic data.

Essential Functions

  • Operate a personal computer and other office equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with others in person and over the telephone.
  • Meet deadlines and complete multiple priority projects under stressful conditions.
  • Establish, implement and achieve goals and objectives.
  • Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and/or County regulations.
  • Represent the County with the community and other agencies.
  • Frequent use of depth perception, peripheral vision and color perception.
  • Frequently lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects.
  • Frequent use of data entry device including repetitive hand and arm motion.
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Normal dexterity, frequent holding and grasping.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function.

Knowledge Of:

  • The principles, methodology and procedures of epidemiology, including design and evaluation of epidemiological research of common diseases and methods of disease control.
  • Methods and format for preparation of scientific papers.
  • Principles and practices of statistics as applied in Epidemiology.
  • Current developments in epidemiology and general medicine.
  • Environmental, social, economic, cultural and other issues impacting epidemiology.
  • Causes, means of transmission, and method of control of communicable diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS and tuberculosis.
  • Community resources and demography.
  • Budget development.

Ability To:

  • Plan, conduct and evaluate epidemiological projects and studies.
  • Prepare well-written, clear and concise epidemiological reports and publications.
  • Evaluate complex issues related to environmental and communicable diseases and prepare recommendations for their control.
  • Organize and present ideas through oral communication and in writing.
  • Develop, organize, analyze and interpret statistical data.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
