Mentor A Promise is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth (ages 5–18) experiencing housing instability, grounded in the belief that every child is a Promise—full of potential, dignity, and possibility. We deliver consistent, high-quality programming across mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression in shelters, schools, and community spaces, creating structured environments where students can grow, be seen, and build lasting skills. Through signature experiences like The Imagination Studio, The Kitchen Table, The Sound Lab, and The Story Space, we nurture academic development, emotional well-being, and creative voice, all within a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and accessibility-centered framework. Role Overview

The Director of Assessment & Learning Quality serves as the leader responsible for strengthening educational quality, student learning outcomes, assessment practices, and continuous improvement across PromiseLearning initiatives.

This role oversees the development of learning standards, assessment frameworks, quality assurance processes, instructional evaluation practices, and student outcome measures that help ensure educational excellence across MAP's programs.

Working closely with curriculum leaders, program teams, PromiseMeasure, PromiseRooted, PromiseConnects, and organizational leadership, the Director helps ensure that learning experiences are effective, engaging, evidence-informed, and aligned with organizational goals.

The ideal candidate is passionate about educational quality, assessment design, learning outcomes, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Assessment Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and lead MAP's educational assessment strategy
  • Establish learning outcome frameworks across educational initiatives
  • Create standards for measuring student growth and learning
  • Promote evidence-informed educational decision-making
  • Support continuous improvement across learning programs

Learning Quality & Educational Excellence

  • Develop systems that strengthen educational quality and consistency
  • Review educational initiatives to ensure alignment with learning objectives
  • Support instructional quality and program effectiveness
  • Promote best practices in assessment and learning evaluation
  • Strengthen student-centered approaches to educational improvement

Assessment Design & Evaluation

  • Develop assessment tools, rubrics, surveys, and learning measurement frameworks
  • Support collection and interpretation of learning data
  • Monitor educational performance indicators and student outcomes
  • Help identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities for improvement
  • Ensure assessment practices remain practical, equitable, and meaningful

Learning Outcomes & Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze learning outcomes across educational initiatives
  • Support data-informed program enhancements
  • Develop recommendations that strengthen student success
  • Promote a culture of learning, reflection, and improvement
  • Help ensure educational programs achieve intended outcomes

Educational Research & Best Practices

  • Monitor trends in assessment, educational quality, and learning science
  • Research evidence-based approaches to educational improvement
  • Identify innovative practices that strengthen learning outcomes
  • Support adoption of proven educational strategies
  • Contribute to organizational learning initiatives

Cross-Divisional Collaboration

  • Partner with PromiseMeasure on impact and outcome evaluation
  • Collaborate with PromiseRooted and PromiseConnects on educational quality initiatives
  • Support curriculum and instructional design teams
  • Work with educational leaders to strengthen learning experiences
  • Align assessment efforts with organizational priorities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in education, assessment, evaluation, instructional design, curriculum development, educational leadership, learning analytics, or related fields
  • Strong understanding of educational assessment and learning outcomes
  • Experience designing evaluation systems or quality improvement initiatives
  • Excellent analytical and communication abilities
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Passion for educational excellence and student success

Volunteer Expectations

  • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
