What are the responsibilities and job description for the Residential Counselor position at Mental Health Association of Nassau County?
Mental Health Association of Nassau County (MHANC) is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to improving mental health in our community through advocacy, education, program development, and the delivery of direct services. Our organization is looking for a motivated individual with a calling to help adults with mental illness by becoming a Residential Counselor.
The Residential Counselor is to provide assistance and support to individuals diagnosed with mental illness who reside in homes operated by the Mental Health Association of Nassau County. Counselors will promote greater independence by assisting and supporting residents in day-to-day activities, personal care, skills building, community integration and counseling around everyday activities. Positions include weekdays and/or weekends, scheduled by the Program Supervisor.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Implement nutritional components, including shopping, menu planning, and food preparation/clean-up and when necessary, dietary needs.
Implement activities of daily living.
Coordinate care including psychiatric, medical, dental, etc., to incorporate conducting collateral contacts, scheduling, and attending treatment team meetings etc.
Develop service plans intended to deliver client centered services focusing on skills related to independent living, support residents participation with service plans and review plans quarterly.
Conduct restorative service sessions and document progress in client chart via electronic record.
Manage crises and emergency situations.
Implement all facets of the functional program including program philosophy, goals, and objectives as well as adhere to agency & program policies and procedures.
Assist with monthly fire drills and ensure compliance with all fire and safety procedures including periodic evaluation of residents capability of self-preservation.
Coordinate, implement & provide transportation for recreational activities.
Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the residence and property and report concerns accordingly.
Conduct and document weekly community meetings with residents to discuss/address issues and/or concerns.
Attending staff meetings, in-service training and other training as instructed by Supervisory staff.
Work with agents of other departments to assist with coordination of care.
Perform related duties as required and necessary.
Requirements
Education & Experience
High School Diploma and five years experience in human services.
Bachelors degree in human services or related field preferred.
Other Qualifications
Experience in a community residence setting preferred.
Valid NYS Driver's License required
Basic computer skills
Good written and oral communication skills
