What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Outreach Advocate position at Mental Health Association in Passaic County?
The Peer Outreach Support Team is made up of individuals with life experience with mental illness, who serve as mentors for other adults with mental health issues living in the community. Individualized assistance is provided to develop social skills, educational, vocational, and recreational interests.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Personal experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery
- Lived experience with mental health/substance use issues involves having personally faced challenges related to conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and/or substance related disorders. This experience encompasses not only the symptoms and struggles associated with the condition but also the journey toward managing and overcoming these challenges.
- Ability to engage with peers of mental health/substance use services
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Good computer skills including familiarity with online mediums
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work flexible hours, which may include occasional evening or weekend appointments
- A valid New Jersey Driver's license in good standing with the Division of Motor Vehicles
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop a supportive relationship with peers
- Assist with development of Wellness and Recovery Plans
- Facilitate groups and work with peers on an individual basis
- Support peers in the development of independent living skills, teaching peers how to navigate transportation resources in the community, facilitating their participation in social, educational, spiritual, recreational, and cultural activities
- Modeling social skills, problem solving skills, and activities of daily living skills
- Assistance in completion of Psychiatric Advance Directives
- Establish collaborative relationships with professionals and peer providers in the mental health community
- Attendance and participation in biweekly group supervision meetings
- Complete required initial orientation and agency sponsored trainings
- Complete all required documentation in a timely manner
