Position Description: 

The Director of Finance serves as the organization's senior financial leader and lead accountant, responsible for the overall financial management and accounting operations of the agency. This position provides strategic financial leadership while performing and overseeing day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger management, budgeting, financial reporting, grant accounting, cash flow management, payroll oversight, audits, and the development and maintenance of internal controls. Working closely with the Executive Director, leadership team, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors, the Director of Finance ensures the organization's financial stability, regulatory compliance, and adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards while supporting the agency's mission through sound fiscal stewardship.

Essential Job Functions:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the items listed below.

Financial Leadership

  • Develop and monitor the annual operating budget. 
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and analysis for leadership and the Board.
  • Provide financial forecasting and cash flow projections. 
  • Advise the Executive Director on financial strategy and risk management. 

Accounting

  • Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts. 
  • Prepare and review journal entries and account reconciliations. 
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes. 
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processing. 
  • Ensure accurate recording of all financial transactions in accordance with GAAP. 

Grant & Contract Management

  • Track grant budgets and expenditures. 
  • Prepare reimbursement requests and financial reports for government and foundation grants. 
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements and Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) where applicable. 
  • Collaborate with program staff to monitor grant spending. 

Audit & Compliance

  • Coordinate the annual independent audit and IRS Form 990 preparation. 
  • Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies. 
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local reporting requirements. 
  • Manage insurance renewals and financial documentation as needed. 

Leadership

  • Supervise accounting or finance staff, if applicable. 
  • Develop and improve financial procedures and workflows. 
  • Present financial information to the Finance Committee and Board.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. 
  • CPA preferred but not required. 
  • Five to seven years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in nonprofit organizations. 
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, grant accounting, and fund accounting. 
  • Experience with audits, budgeting, payroll, and financial reporting. 
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and accounting software.

Travel Requirements                                                                                                      

Incumbents must possess a valid Driver License and reliable transportation with the ability to travel within New York State, as well as nationally, if required

Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 

This job requires close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  Employee is required to regularly talk and hear.

Salary : $65,000 - $70,000
