Job Synopsis

The Executive Director of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) U.S. is chief executive officer for MCC U.S. The Director is responsible for the overall leadership of MCC US’s relief, development and peacebuilding work of this worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches. The Director represents the identity, vision, values, mission and strategic direction of MCC U.S. throughout the organization and embodies the voice of the organization, both internally and externally with constituents, supporting churches, media and government officials. The Director reports to the MCC U.S. Board. The Director works collaboratively with the MCC Canada Director to provide leadership for the shared MCC International Program and is the face and voice of MCC U.S., speaking on behalf of MCC U.S. and building understanding and support for the mission of MCC among its increasingly diverse constituency. The Director provides oversight, direction, and leadership of the national domestic program (National Peace and Justice Ministries) in collaboration with the Associate Executive Director and guides regional domestic program through leadership of the regional directors’ team. The Director employs strong interpersonal skills to help resolve differences within the organization.

Essential:
  • Minimum Bachelors degree and five to ten years related experience in large intercultural organization.
  • Experience in complex nonprofit governance organizations and knowledge of governance best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise a high level team of directors.
  • Clearly demonstrated faith in Christ, and shared belief of foundational Anabaptist theological beliefs with membership and active involvement with an Anabaptist congregation or community
  • Strong English written and verbal communication skills: able to engage and give clear direction to teams in a large and complex organization where decision making is diffused and matrixed.
  • Capacity to negotiate organizational and theological differences.
  • Documented experience in innovating, envisioning, implementing, evaluating, and improving significant organizational initiatives.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to further developing intercultural competence
Preferred:
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Advanced degree in a related field such as, but not limited to organizational development, business administration, marketing, nonprofit leadership, international development
  • Understanding of national constituent denominations and conferences
  • International cross-cultural living and work experience
Key Responsibilities

Supervision: The Executive Director supervises the Associate Executive Director, Advancement Director, Organizational Development and Racial Equity Director and an Executive Assistant.


Major Responsibilities:

Internal Leadership: Provide inspirational leadership in the development of creative and innovative programs and related support services within the context of the MCC Covenants and inspire the passions of staff in their implementation of the covenant. Build trust and shape strong partnerships within the MCC International Program, with MCC Canada and the regional MCCs and work to create a safe and empowering environment for all staff.
  • Lead and supervise the work of the MCC US Regional Executive Director Team in creative and innovative implementation of the identity, purpose vision, priorities, approaches, and values of MCC .
  • Responsible for the organizational health of MCC US identifying areas for innovation and growth and managing internal and external risks.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with the MCC Canada/MCC U.S. Covenant and the Regional Covenant of the MCCs in the U.S. (documents available to candidates for review)
  • Provide oversight of the financial management of a $30 million complex charitable organization by engaging with MCC leaders annually to determine financial and resource allocations among International Program and domestic MCC regional programs.
  • Provide spiritual leadership for MCC staff through regular communication and presence.
  • Promote an organizational culture that focuses on dismantling any barriers based on race, economic inequality or gender-based oppression. Take leadership in assessing and addressing these barriers.
  • Set the tone for an organizational culture that prevents and responds to situations of abuse of power. Promote and support safeguarding by sending regular messages to staff, ensuring sufficient staffing and resources, and monitor organizational progress. Work with all MCC managers collaboratively to create and maintain an organizational culture that prevents and responds to situations of abuse of power (sexual harassment, child abuse, racism, exploitation, and fraud among other situations).
  • Travel internationally at least twice annually to thank and encourage various MCC staff, and local partners, and to better understand the work of MCC.
  • Ensure effective collaboration and trust, including regular consultation, with the MCC Canada Executive Director and meetings with MCC Canada and MCC U.S. board chairs.
  • Engage with MCC regional staff and boards through annual attendance at Regional MCC board meetings and engagement with regional staff.
  • Help lead and assist with fundraising and development activities including:
    • Clearly present and articulate MCC’s mission, vision and “case for support” in ways that enthuse and energize constituents.
    • Encourage the organization to fully embrace a “culture of philanthropy,” including regular, generous giving of board and staff.
    • Work with donor relations staff to engage with selected major donors and other key stakeholders, including solicitation of their gifts and support.
    • Encourage effective ways of raising other forms of support for MCC, such as material resources, prayer, employment/service, etc.
    • In the event of a major fundraising campaign, dedicate a significant amount of attention and time to support and give leadership, in partnership with the Campaign Director.
External representation Represent MCC beyond itself with constituent denominations, donors, inter-organization relationships and other stakeholders including national government bodies
  • Ensure deep and regular connections with constituent denominations and denominational leaders.
  • Be available to engage in advocacy and public policy with coalitions and federal agencies.
  • Take an active role in associations and coalitions in which MCC is a member. (i.e. Mennonite World Conference, Council for Anabaptist International Ministries, InterAction, Accord Network, etc.)
  • Support advancement as applicable with donor and institutional visits
Governance functions Provide support for the governance functions of the MCC U.S. Board, including establishing and monitoring compliance with MCC’s identity, purpose, vision, priorities, approaches and values
  • Consult regularly with the Board Chair and board executive committee and assist the MCC U.S Board in its governance responsibilities.
  • Approve and recommend meeting packages that provide excellent material for board and committee governance.
  • Ensure that adequate plans are in place for strategic direction, budget development and income generation.
  • Attend MCC US board meetings and serve on board committees as requested by the chair.
  • Partner with the chair of the Board Development Committee and Board chair in board member recruitment, board orientation and education.
  • Assist the Board in the review and revision of corporate documents such as bylaws, governance manuals etc.
  • Meet regularly with the board chair to plan meeting agendas, give strategic updates, share potential or actual risk situations, consider future activities and other issues as determined by the chair or Executive Director.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Salary Details

Base salary: $132,560. Starting salary may be adjusted up to $160,000 based on previous experience.

Medical, dental and vision, 23 days paid vacation, sick time and 10 holidays/year. Life insurance provided, as well as long and short term disability coverage. The retirement plan, with MCC contribution of 7%, begins after six months of employment.
