DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, the Education Specialist will provide specialized academic instruction in a Special Education Day class utilizing appropriate strategies to identify students with moderate to severe learning disabilities in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Case management, professionalism, communication, parent engagement and partnerships, and the ability to collaborate with colleagues are cornerstones to this position.

SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Demonstrated expertise in designing and delivering professional development to special education and general education staff on effective/evidence-based interventions to increase student skills in the areas of behavior, academic achievement, and social-emotional development.

Applicants possess experience working with kindergarten - 5th grade students with a variety of learning styles, including students with Autism, a range of communication abilities, and behavioral needs.

Provide students with specialized instruction based on their unique needs resulting from their identified disabilities.

Familiar with early childhood developmental stages, social development, language development, physical development, and early childhood readiness to learn.

Establishes and maintains a safe, orderly, and child centered classroom environment.

Monitors individual student’s progress utilizing data that reflects student performance on their IEP goals; adjusts instruction as needed based on analysis of the data.

Act as case manager for assigned students: assess students and write Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) to meet the individual student's needs.

Writes and implements effective behavior plans for students and participates in manifestation determinations for students as necessary.

Plan, design, and implement a comprehensive standards-based instructional program.

Collaborate with other teachers and facilitate the integration of students into general education classes. Monitor student progress and the overall effectiveness of the integration models.

Understand and relate to students with special needs, assuring the proper implementation of educational programs, including designing and implementing appropriate behavior management techniques for use in instructional and disciplinary purposes.

Prepare all necessary reports and maintain educational records required and necessary to provide a quality educational program.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with parents, general education teachers, and other service providers or agencies.

Communicate effectively with parents, team members, staff, and agency representatives.

Demonstrates knowledge of special education laws as well as SELPA and District policies and procedures.

Participate in professional development and maintain a high level of professional competence.

Knowledge of Assistive Technology and AAC devices.

Lead and train a team of highly skilled paraprofessionals.

Familiarity with the Structured Teaching Model (TEACCH).

Experience with the Unique curriculum preferred.
Perform other duties normally required to be performed by certificated employees as an adjunct to the regular teaching assignment.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid California credential authorizing the teaching of special education students with moderate to severe disabilities or ability to obtain one.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Training preferred or willingness to be trained.
