Under the general supervision of the Director of Special Education, implement and coordinate activities that support the student’s education program for ages birth to 22; demonstrate extensive knowledge and practical application of behavioral principles, practices, methods and strategies applicable to students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), including behavior management based on positive reinforcement; support the successful integration of the DHH student into the general education classroom, resource classroom, or special day classroom and other school settings; personal qualities include leadership, integrity, fairness, optimism, self-confidence, persistence and vitality.
Requirements / Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • Possess a valid California Special Education Teaching Credential authorizing teaching of the deaf or hard-of-hearing (i.e., Education Specialist – Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing; Specialist – Communication Handicapped; Standard Teaching Credential, Restricted Special Education Credential or Limited Specialized Preparation Credential in Deaf and Severely Hard-of-Hearing; Special Secondary Credential in either Deaf or Lip Reading; or Exceptional Children Credential – Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing) or be eligible to enroll in a university intern program by meeting the following requirements: * A Bachelor of Arts Degree from an accredited college or university * Passing scores on a core subject-matter exam* • A Master of Arts Degree with an emphasis in special education preferred; • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience working with a wide range of age groups and handicapping conditions preferred; • Possess or obtain upon employment, a valid California Driver's License; • Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties safely and effectively, including lifting fifty (50) pounds on an occasional basis and in excess of fifty (50) pounds with assistance. * Candidates who have only a BA may be employed on a Provisional Internship Permit to allow time to pass a subject-matter exam in order to enroll in a university intern program. Employee will be a member of the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS) and may elect to be a member of the Mendocino County Federation of School Employees Union.
