What are the responsibilities and job description for the Patient Care Extern - RN Intern/ Externs - Variable - PT -20 position at Memorial Hospital at Gulfport?
The Nurse Extern is a temporary position for nursing students to practice delivering quality patient care in a variety of nursing areas. The Nurse extern will work under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse in providing direct and indirect patient care in accordance with common nursing functions and daily nursing plan activities.
- Observes and assists with the delivery of direct and indirect patient care through the nursing process
- Observes all direct patient care performed by Registered Nurses, such as patient education, medication administrations and various invasive procedures
- Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides personal care, and emotional support
- Performs patient care services and treatments as prescribed by the physician or as indicated by the patient's condition under the supervision of the RN
- Monitors patient condition levels; reports changes to the appropriate individuals
- Provides or assists with patient care services, collection of specimens for diagnostic testing, and preparation of patient for surgery or other procedures
- Assists with transfers of patients to and from other departments and with discharges
- Follows safety rules in all areas of patient care and ensures safe patient environment
- Maintains patient data and records
- Communicates patient/ family health care needs to the appropriate health care provider
- Reports significant events and information timely to appropriate team member
- Assists with planning by sharing input from patient and family with appropriate team member
- Answers telephone and call lights appropriately and timely delivering information to staff
- Maintains supplies and equipment of the assigned area
- Ensures all patient care and unit equipment are in proper working order
- Performs courier services as requested
- Maintains adequate inventory of supplies on assigned unit
Education:
- High School or GED
Must be enrolled and completed basic medical/surgical nursing in an accredited school of nursing
Must be within 12 months of graduation
Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
