Job Summary

The Medical Physicist is responsible for implementing and maintaining advanced technologies, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and conducting ongoing quality assurance assessments. In addition to these responsibilities, the Medical Physicist ensures adherence to safety protocols and promotes a culture of continuous compliance and improvement. This role involves collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, advising on research initiatives, and contributes to the continuous improvement of medical physics services across the healthcare system. Additionally, the position involves providing regular reports to the Director of Radiation Safety to ensure alignment with organizational goals and standards.Job Description

This home-based position offers the rare opportunity to influence the entire imaging process across a large health system. As part of a trusted and growing in-house physics team, you'll lead CT and MRI protocol development-particularly in cardiac imaging-build unique partnerships with vendors to evaluate and introduce emerging technologies, guide new imaging initiatives, and advise imaging leadership on important equipment and purchasing decisions. You'll have the autonomy, support, and time to develop meaningful programs, remain at the forefront of the field through conferences and professional development, and help shape the continued growth of a truly collaborative physics program.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master of Science in Physics, Health Physics, Radiological Physics, Medical Physics, or related field required. PhD preferred.

License/Certification:

  • Texas License in Medical Physics specialty required.

  • Board Certification by the American Board of Radiology or American Board Science of Nuclear Medicine or American Board of Health Physics or other nationally recognized medical physics board certification.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • Clinical experience post graduate training preferred.

  • Four (4) years of related experience preferred.

  • Member of the American Association of Physicist in Medicine or other equivalent professional society.

  • Eligible to be the principal Radiation Safety Officer for both Radioactive Material licenses and Certificate of X-ray registrations as defined by Texas Administration Code 289.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Provides expertise in both Diagnostic Radiological Physics and Medical Nuclear Physics.

  • Carries out the responsibilities and duties of the primary Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for both X-Ray Registration (Certificate of Registration/COR) and Radioactive Materials (RAM) licenses which includes serving as the primary liaison to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

  • Assists in development and evaluation of radiation safety policies, procedures and practices to ensure appropriate radiation practice and minimize radiation exposure to patients, medical personnel and staff.

  • Oversees the required Equipment Performance Evaluations (EPE) of x-ray emitting diagnostic equipment (fluoroscopy, radiography, digital radiography, bone density, computed tomography, mammography) and other diagnostic imaging equipment (Ultrasound and MRI), following guidance from the latest standards and regulations, and works with various personnel to troubleshoot and evaluate image quality and technical quality problems.

  • Performs dosimetry calculations to ensure regulatory standards are met. Performs shielding calculations and measurements to ensure public exposure levels are within regulatory requirements.

  • Works with architects to provide optimal space utilizing with radiation ALARA principles in mind.

  • Participates in quarterly medical physicist reviews (quarterly audits) in order to ensure compliance with regulatory radiation safety requirements and acceptable standards of practice in handling, administering, and disposing of radioactive materials.

  • Collaborates with the health physicist to investigate and respond to radiation incidents involving patients, employers or visitors and take appropriate corrective action(s) as a subject expert in order to mitigate/minimize the impact to the individuals and the facility.

  • Oversees and participates in Radiation Protocol Committees (RPC) and Radiation Safety Committees (RSC) meetings to ensure radiation safety best practices are carried out and state regulations are met.

  • Assists with accreditations through the American College of Radiology (ACR) as needed.

  • Oversees and provides expertise in regulatory surveys and inspections.

  • Coordinates the acceptance testing of new imaging equipment and provides recommendations on shielding evaluation and system performance requirements.

  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
