Job Profile Summary 

​This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients.  In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Surgical Services duties: Responsible for medical services involving the excision or incision of a patient's body, such as interventional pain management and other procedures. This position also works to provide a safe environment for patients undergoing invasive procedures or surgery.  A clinical technologist role that has specialized knowledge or skills gained through a combination of vocational education, training, and experience. This role will be most commonly applied to patient care and/or scientific/laboratory jobs.  An entry-level role typically requiring little to no prior knowledge or experience and requiring vocational or technical education.  Work is routine or follows standard procedures, is closely supervised, and communicates information that requires little explanation or interpretation. 

Hours: Variable, per-diem (3 shifts per schedule, 2 of which are weekend if dept need. 2 major holidays required).

Job Overview 

The Surgical Technician, under the guidance of the Registered Nurse, is responsible for the care and safety of surgical patients. This role is responsible for assisting the physician with the preparation of and the technical aspects of the role of the scrub person during  surgical procedures.   

Job Description 

Minimum Qualifications: 

1. High school diploma or equivalent. 

2. Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program OR Massachusetts's Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

3. Surgical Technician certification through an accredited program or within 12 months of completing program. 

4. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

1. Two (2) years of Operating Room Experience. 

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list.  Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. 

1. Assists in the set-up for specific surgical procedures in accordance with established Surgical Services procedures and individual physician preferences.  Responsible for updating physician preference cards. 

2. Sets up individual case carts with appropriate instruments and equipment for next day cases.  Makes Clinical Practice Leader aware of any problems. 

3. Performs the role of the scrub person during surgical procedures: understands and applies the fundamentals of aseptic technique by maintaining the sterile field, anticipates the surgeon’s needs, passes instruments, knowledge of anatomy, follows proper medication administration, maintains accurate accounts of sponges, sharps, and instruments in conjunction with RN and physicians. 

4. Carries out technical tasks other than cutting, clamping and suturing of tissues. 

5. Applies electrocautery to clamps, not tissue, on bleeders under the supervision of the surgeon. 

6. Adapts to changes in work schedule in a positive, professional manner. 

7. Demonstrates personal initiative in maintaining skill level in all specialties. 

8. Demonstrates cost consciousness in the care and use of equipment and supplies. 

9. Functions effectively in emergency situations. 

10. Assists the RN/Transporter in transferring the patient to designated room, Prepares surgical specimens for circulating nurse to identify and label for clinical laboratory. 

11. May assist anesthesiologist and other personnel in setting up equipment and obtaining emergency or other supplies. 

12. Assists in general cleaning activity of the Operating Room. 

13. Provides “on-call” coverage as required by the Department. 

14. Attends staff meetings and in-services related to department. 

15. Seeks experience to expand and maintain knowledge and skills. 

Physical Requirements:  

1. Occasional lifting of 30-35 lbs and turning patients.  Prolonged standing and walking.  Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting.  

2. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulations for performing procedures and computer keyboard.   

3. Requires ability to see computer screen, reports, and perform assistance in procedures with accuracy.    Requires ability to hear instructions from physician and nursing staff. 

Skills & Abilities: 

1. Good interpersonal and organizational skills. 

2. Ability to work with detailed, confidential material and information. 

3. Computer experience. 

4. Ability to follow directions and work with precision under pressure. 

5. Maintains sensitivity, maturity and flexibility in coping with difficult situations.   

6. Demonstrates knowledge of operative procedures, equipment and routine.

Pay Range:

 

$29.42 - $36.57
