General Responsibilities
The Physical Therapist & OT Supervisor is responsible for providing clinical physical therapy to Melmark New England individuals. Additional clinical duties of therapists include management of treatment delivered through direct therapeutic services, tracking information and consultative services as needed.
Melmark New England serves children, adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders, acquired brain injury, neurological diseases and disorders, comorbid mental health disorders and severe challenging behaviors. Populations served are intensely physically challenging. The Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapy Supervisor position requires that staff be aware that students who are served may exhibit aggressive and/or self-injurious behavior. Students served may have had multiple treatment failures prior to this placement. Therapists are expected to implement highly technical clinical and teaching programs that require Therapists to be constantly alert, attentive and ready to respond to student’s needs.
- Observes student appearance and hygiene and reports concerns timely.
- Immediate nursing notification to Educational Coordinators of health issues appropriate to each child. Completes student daily well body checks and discovery of bruise.
- Evacuates students properly during fire and emergency drills.
- Promotes safety of self and students through adherence of safety policies which may include body positioning, physical management techniques, Universal precautions and proper lifting of students.
- Uses and maintains student adaptive equipment and/ or augmentative devices needed for students. Files an incident report immediately if any defects.
- Follows student mealtime procedures as specified in the student plan.
- Follow student toileting procedures as specified in the student plan.
- Maintains a clean environment in the school building.
- Clinical Skills
- Implements updated behavior plans demonstrated by reviewing and signing communication/ training log.
- Is able to accurately collect data.
- Demonstrates good problem solving skills while working with students.
- Remains calm and composed during behavioral incidences.
- Demonstrates Professional Boundaries with students.
- Clinical interactions are positive and facilitates student learning and shaping.
- Provides direct coverage as needed.
- Educational Skills
- Implements IEP objectives as written and designed (each program must be implemented a minimum of one time per biweekly period per each objective per child); ensures maximum independence growth.
- Completes IOA on therapy related programs with staff a minimum of one time per month.
- Reviews graphs prior to academic meetings and adds notes to planning meeting notes or comes to meeting with notes prepared.
Basic Qualifications
Education/Training: Graduate of approved Physical Therapy Program or Occupational Therapy Master's or Doctorate degree.
Certifications/Licensure: Current licensure for physical therapy in Massachusetts. A valid US driver’s license and a minimum age of twenty-one (21) years old. Must be capable of attaining approved Melmark driver status. Must meet Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) background check requirements. Successful completion of employer provided certification in CPR, First Aid, Crisis Intervention, and Melmark’s Orientation Program and New Hire Onsite training program.
Skill(s): Skills in clinical assessment and evaluation as needed to accurately diagnose the physical therapy needs of Melmark New England's individuals.
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years physical therapy experience preferred.
Interrelationships: Works cooperatively with all members of the multidisciplinary team (Nursing Services, Vocational Services, Clinical Services, Residential Staff, Allied Health Services) to ensure that each student’s educational requirements are met.
