Project Description
Distribution and Occurrence of Microcystins and Nodularins in Lake Corpus Christi - A Baseline Study for Environmental Biomonitoring
Harmful algal blooms in freshwater systems pose increasing risks to water quality and public health, particularly in regions experiencing environmental change and nutrient loading. This project focuses on biomonitoring and environmental assessment of cyanotoxins, specifically microcystins and nodularins, in Lake Corpus Christi. The study integrates environmental sampling and exposure modeling to better understand toxin distribution and potential health impacts. Using interdisciplinary methods, the project aims to generate evidence that informs risk assessment, supports public health decision-making, and contributes to sustainable water resource management.
Role Description
Melaram Lab is seeking a Volunteer Environmental Health Toxicologist for a fully remote position to support this project. The volunteer will assist with exposure modeling, data analysis, manuscript writing, and public health translational research. Responsibilities include working with environmental and toxin data, contributing to statistical analyses, and assisting with interpretation and reporting of findings. Collaboration with an interdisciplinary research team and participation in virtual meetings will be expected.
This role is well suited for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, or early-career professionals seeking applied experience in environmental toxicology.
