Position Overview
We are seeking a Shipping Supervisor to lead daily shipping and logistics operations at our sawmill in Alberta, VA. This role is ideal for a high-potential candidate interested in advancing into mill or operations management. The Shipping Supervisor will gain hands-on experience coordinating people, production flow, inventory, and transportation—making this an excellent training ground for a future management trainee.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate daily shipping activities for finished lumber and by-products
- Schedule outbound loads and communicate with trucking companies and customers
- Ensure accurate loading, documentation, and weight compliance
- Monitor inventory movement and staging to support production flow
- Lead, train, and coach shipping crew on safety, quality, and efficiency
- Enforce company safety policies and DOT-related requirements
- Collaborate with Production, Sales, and Maintenance teams
- Identify opportunities to improve workflow, layout, and shipping efficiency
Management Development Opportunity
This role offers direct exposure to mill operations and leadership responsibilities, including:
- Supervising hourly employees
- Learning production scheduling and logistics planning
- Understanding lumber grades, species, and customer requirements
- Developing leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
- Preparing for advancement into roles such as Operations Supervisor, Assistant Plant Manager, or Management Trainee
Qualifications
- Previous experience in shipping, logistics, or warehouse supervision (industrial or manufacturing preferred)
- Sawmill, lumber, or forest products experience a plus
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, outdoor/industrial environment
- Basic computer skills (shipping documents, inventory, email)
- Forklift or heavy equipment experience preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education a plus
