JOB SUMMARY: The Manager is responsible for all paramedical activities and total nursing care delivered within the Perioperative Services Department. The Manager supervises and directs nursing care and all related activities of the perioperative area, according to the policies and procedures of the MMHS and departments in order to assure the highest quality of patient care: included responsibility for environment, staff personnel, materials and equipment control. Analyzes and evaluates nursing care in the departments, provides for continuing education for all personnel and orientation for new personnel.
PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS
Essential Function
1.
Leadership & Professionalism:
a.
Demonstrates excellent knowledge of MMHS-wide policies and procedures and serves as a resource person for staff under supervision to ensure the conduct of business in conformance with them.
b.
Assumes responsibility for maintaining the currency of department policies and procedures, the communication of pertinent changes to them to the appropriate personnel MMHS-wide, and ensures the departmental staff has a good working knowledge of them.
c.
Maintains full compliance with Title 22, OSHA, and Life Safety Code standards and regulations as well as all other regulatory agencies governing the activities of the department. Stays current with JCAHO and perioperative specialty organizations (AORN, ASPAN) requirements and standards and ensures compliance with all activities within the department.
2.
Managerial Responsibilities:
a.
Demonstrates the ability to lead, direct, organize, control, manage, and assume all responsibility for the operations of the department.
b.
Sets goals, priorities, staffing levels, and expectations, in alignment with organizational goals and objectives, in all areas of the department.
c.
Supervises the orientation of new employees in the department as well as ongoing training of all personnel in the department to ensure competency.
d.
Sets mutually beneficial goals for individual employees to attain and give regular feedback on their progress including, but not limited to, a 90-day orientation evaluation for new employees and annual written review of all employees within required timeframes.
e.
Positively mentors by praising in public and counseling in private and by modeling positive behavior for all staff to follow. Gives ongoing verbal feedback and coaching with courage and consideration. Performs and documents progressive discipline per MMHS policy.
f.
Utilizes necessary resources to ensure smooth conduct of business and optimal productivity and safety in the department.
g.
Develops, prepares, monitors, and, when necessary, revise the annual department budget in collaboration with the CNO and CFO.
h.
Develops and maintains a departmental equipment inventory and strategically plans and budgets for replacement in collaboration with the CFO and CNO.
i.
Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure effective communication of MMHS goals and objectives, effective communication within the department provides the opportunity for feedback on work processes, provides a forum for problem resolution to maintain team motivation, and to ensure a positive attitude of all personnel.
j.
Maintains accountability of all staff under supervision for effective and productive use of time and optimal utilization of skills and resources.
k.
Effectively delegates projects, work assignments, and tasks to staff with clear expectations of the desired results, explanation of the available resources, and clarification of accountability as work progresses, and clear guidelines to follow.
l.
Provides leadership in PI to the department by assess-work processes, developing team-oriented solutions to problems, implementing changes and evaluating the results.
m.
Models continuous life-long learning behavior to staff and fosters a positive, non-threatening learning environment.
n.
Maintains regular communication with senior management through written and verbal reports that provide an overview of departmental activities, trends, goals, objectives and important projects and plans.
o.
Provides senior management with thoughtful analysis of identified problems within or involving the department and recommends viable, cost-effective solutions for implementation.
p.
Attends required meetings and is an active and effective team member.
p.
Participates in management team activities including strategic planning, capital equipment planning, physical planning, physical plant maintenance and development planning, service expansion and development planning and staff compensation and benefit planning.
q.
Develops and implements a system for soliciting feedback from a cross section of the internal and external customers of department and reports the results to senior management at least annually.
3.
Judgment:
a.

4.
Coordinates the nursing care of the patient during perioperative care.
a.
Responsible for the safety of the patient while in the operating rooms.
b.
Responsible for the supervision of non-professional personnel in the area.
c.
Coordinates the planning and implementing the nursing care for each assigned patient.
d.
Utilizes a body of nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while giving direct or indirect patient care.
e.
Directs proper care, sterilization and storage of instruments.
f.
Carefully assess and monitors the physical status of the patient. Collects and records necessary data through patient interviews, significant other, observation, review or records, review of diagnostic results, review of physician documentation and consultation with physician and others. Utilizes this information appropriately in planning and delivering patient care.
g.
Able to correlate physicians orders to diagnosis.
h.
Demonstrates knowledge of the medication's actions, contraindications, and side effects before administering the medication.
i.
Knowledgeable of Laboratory work-up and values related to diagnosis.
j.
Anticipates potential problems and adapts to unit changes, (i.e., set priorities in emergencies, changes in patient status and unusual occurrences).
k.
Demonstrates knowledge and skill regarding aseptic technique and MMHS infection control policies for self and others.
l.
Demonstrates respect for patient rights by providing privacy through confidentiality and physical protection
m.
Documents patient care on clinical records In a clear, accurate and concise manner
n.
Demonstrates knowledge of acceptable terminology.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
•
Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing – Required
•
Bachelor degree or equivalent - Required
•
CNOR - Preferred
Work Experience:
•
Minimum of (5) years RN experience, including a minimum of 2 years as a circulating RN in surgery – Required
•
One year Post anesthesia care experience - Preferred
•
Previous leadership, supervisory or management experience - Preferred
Licensing Requirements:
•
Current California RN license - Required
•
Current AHA BLS - Required
•
Current AHA ACLS - Required
•
Current AHA PALS - Required
Language Requirements:
•
Strong written and oral English skills – Required
Skill Requirements:
•
Maintains composure while recognizing the need for immediate response to true emergencies.

Ability to identify and evaluate problems in the surgical department and to implement short-term and long-term solutions.
Physical Demands:
•
Must be able to sit and stand/walk for up to 4hours or more per day.
•
Must be able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds 3 to 4 hours per day.

Moderate exposure to hazardous waste and chemicals.
