Responsibilities
- Administer IV infusions, medications, and treatments accurately following physician orders while maintaining aseptic technique to prevent infections.
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs, physical examinations, and evaluation of clinical needs to tailor infusion therapies effectively.
- Educate patients and their families on infusion procedures, medication management, device care, and safety protocols to promote adherence and confidence.
- Monitor patients’ responses during infusion therapy, identify adverse reactions or complications promptly, and implement appropriate interventions.
- Coordinate with healthcare providers using electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner to document care activities accurately and ensure seamless communication.
- Manage complex cases involving specialty treatments such as botulinum toxin injections for ophthalmology or other therapeutic procedures requiring sterile processing and precise technique.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including physicians specializing in infectious disease care, geriatrics, hospice & palliative medicine, or behavioral health to optimize patient outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and maintain meticulous medical records in accordance with NCQA standards.
- Participate in discharge planning and long-term care coordination for patients transitioning from hospital or nursing home settings to home-based therapies.
- Provide triage support by assessing urgent needs over the phone or in person, prioritizing care based on severity of symptoms such as acute pain or infectious disease concerns.
- Assist with specimen collection/processing when necessary and support laboratory testing requirements related to infusion therapy.
Qualifications
- Current RN licensure with active state registration; additional certifications such as Basic Life Support (BLS) are required.
- Proven experience administering IV infusions, injections, catheter care, and working within aseptic techniques in various settings including hospital medicine, ICU experience, or outpatient clinics.
- Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems like Epic or Cerner; experience with medical documentation including ICD coding (ICD-10/ICD-9) is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pharmacology related to infusion therapy, and medication administration protocols.
- Experience working with diverse patient populations including pediatrics, geriatrics (including memory care), patients with developmental disabilities or dementia care needs.
- Critical care experience such as ICU or trauma center background is advantageous for managing complex cases involving acute pain management or ventilator support.
- Ability to perform physical examinations, venipuncture (venipuncture), phlebotomy, suturing skills preferred but not mandatory.
- Excellent communication skills for patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration; triage skills for urgent situations are essential.
- Knowledge of infection control practices and sterile processing procedures to ensure patient safety during all procedures.
