Accessioning Technician – Molecular Genetics Laboratory

The Accessioning Technician is responsible for receiving, verifying, processing, and accessioning

patient specimens for molecular diagnostic testing. This position ensures all specimens are

accurately identified, documented, and entered into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)

while maintaining compliance with CLIA, CAP/COLA, HIPAA, and laboratory quality standards.

The Accessioning Technician plays a critical role in maintaining specimen integrity and

supporting efficient laboratory workflow.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specimen Receipt and Verification

 Receive and inspect incoming patient specimens and accompanying requisition forms.

 Verify patient identifiers, specimen type, collection date, and test orders for

completeness and accuracy.

 Identify and document specimen discrepancies, missing information, or unacceptable

specimens.

 Communicate specimen issues to client services, healthcare providers, or laboratory

management as needed.

Specimen Accessioning

 Accurately accession specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).

 Generate and apply specimen labels, barcodes, and tracking information.

 Ensure proper chain-of-custody and specimen traceability throughout laboratory

processing.

 Prioritize specimens according to laboratory testing schedules and turnaround time

requirements.

Specimen Processing

 Sort, organize, and prepare specimens for molecular testing workflows.

 Aliquot specimens according to laboratory procedures when required.

 Maintain specimen integrity by following appropriate storage and handling

requirements.

 Route specimens to appropriate testing departments or workstations.

Documentation and Data Entry

 Enter patient demographic and test order information into the LIS.

 Review orders for completeness and accuracy.

 Maintain accurate accessioning records and logs.

 Ensure confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations.

Quality and Compliance

 Follow all laboratory SOPs, quality policies, and safety procedures.

 Participate in quality assurance activities and corrective actions.

 Maintain compliance with CLIA, COLA/CAP, OSHA, HIPAA, and other applicable

regulatory requirements.

 Assist during laboratory inspections and audits.

Inventory and General Laboratory Support

 Monitor accessioning and specimen-processing supplies.

 Notify management when supplies require replenishment.

 Assist with specimen storage, retention, and disposal according to laboratory policies.

 Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Required Qualifications

Education

 High School Diploma or GED required.

 Associate degree in Biological Sciences, Medical Laboratory Technology,

Experience

 Previous laboratory, healthcare, specimen processing, or accessioning experience

preferred.

 Experience working in a molecular diagnostics laboratory is a plus.

 Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

 Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

 Ability to perform repetitive tasks with high accuracy.

 Strong computer and data entry skills.

 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

 Effective verbal and written communication skills.

 Understanding of HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements.

Physical Requirements

 Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.

 Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

 Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist movements.

 Ability to work in a laboratory environment and utilize appropriate PPE.

Working Conditions

 Clinical molecular diagnostics laboratory environment.

 Exposure to potentially infectious materials.

 Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required.

 May require occasional overtime to meet laboratory turnaround times.

Preferred Qualifications

 Experience with molecular diagnostic specimens (UTI, STI, Respiratory, Wound, Eye,

ENT, Nail/Fungal, or other PCR-based testing).

 Experience with LIS systems such as Orchard Harvest, LabDaq, or similar platforms.

 Knowledge of specimen acceptability criteria and laboratory quality systems.

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
