Position Overview:
Medina County is seeking a Director of Shelter Operations to provide leadership, direction, and supervision to ensure the best practices and high standards in animal care at the Medina County Dog Shelter.
Under the direction of the Medina Board of County Commissioners and administrative direction of the County Administrator, the Director of Shelter Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for the County’s Dog Shelter, ensuring exceptional standards of care, team performance, and organizational effectiveness. This role oversees all aspects of daily shelter operations while cultivating a culture rooted in accountability, compassion, and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee kennel operations, ensuring safe, humane, and efficient care
- Establish and maintain standard operating procedures for intake, housing, enrichment, medical coordination, and adoption
- Utilize data and performance metrics to guide operational decisions and improvements
- Develop and implement operational goals in line with the Board of County Commissioners and shelter staff
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including sanitation standards, disease prevention, and security
- Develop and manage Shelter budget operations including monitoring expenses, staffing costs and facility maintenance, along with revenue achievement through fund raising and grant opportunities
- Promote enrichment and behavior support programs to enhance adoptability and well-being while in the shelter
- Collaborate with veterinary partners for medical protocols and care oversight
- Build partnerships with rescue organizations, veterinary providers, other shelters, and community agencies
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Animal Science or related field (experience may substitute)
- Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in animal sheltering, kennel management, or similar environment
- Demonstrated experience supervising and developing teams
- Experience managing budgets and operational metrics
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- High emotional intelligence, empathy, sound judgement, and the ability to manage complex interpersonal dynamics
- Able to lead in an emotionally demanding, high-accountability environment
- Ability to work independently with flexible hours, including occasional weekends and emergencies
- Valid Ohio driver’s license, clean driving record and proof of adequate vehicle insurance.
- Working knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment.

Starting Rate: $64,854.40 – $81,057.60
