POSITION OBJECTIVE:
The Construction Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the accounting and financial operations of Nisqually Construction Services (NCS), with a primary focus on construction project accounting, job costing, cash flow management, and accurate financial reporting. This role ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), internal controls, and applicable regulatory requirements while supporting operational decision-making and financial transparency.
Working closely with Project Managers and the General Manager, the Construction Accounting Manager monitors project budgets, cost controls, profitability, and cash flow to ensure timely and reliable financial information. The position leads month-end and year-end close activities, prepares financial statements and management reporting, coordinates audit activities, and translates complex financial data into clear, actionable insights.
This role collaborates closely with the Controller and broader accounting team at Medicine Creek Enterprise Corporation (MCEC) and plays a key role in strengthening financial processes, internal controls, and long-term financial stability for NCS.
This role is responsible for supporting a strong internal control environment and ensuring all financial activities are documented, accurately, and audit ready.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, construction management or related field.
· Minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of progressive accounting experience, with demonstrated experience in project-based construction accounting environments.
· 2-3 years of supervisory experience.
Demonstrated Experience with:
· Month-end and year-end close processes.
· Bank and balance sheet reconciliations.
· Cash flow reporting and forecasting.
· Financial statement preparation and analysis.
· GAAP compliance and internal controls.
· Experience coordinating with external auditors and responding to audit requests.
· Strong proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
· Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and construction/project accounting software, including job costing and project tracking tools (e.g., spectrum, HeavyJob, or similar platforms).
· Proven ability to identify, resolve, and prevent accounting issues.
· Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
· Demonstrated commitment to accuracy, accountability, and ethical financial practices.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge:
· Construction accounting experience, including job costing and WIP reporting.
· Experience reporting to executive leadership.
· Experience working within a subsidiary or parent-company reporting structure.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Accounting Operations & Compliance
- Manages all accounting aspects of construction projects, including job costing, budget-to-actual analysis, variance reporting, and contract administration.
- Oversees Accounts Receivable functions, including customer billing, collections, and account reconciliations.
- Reviews project contracts, change orders, and cost structures to analyze profitability and forecast financial outcomes.
- Oversees Accounts Payable (AP) processing, including subcontractor payments, lien waivers, insurance compliance, and certified payroll, providing guidance and review to accounting staff.
- Provides recommendations to leadership regarding project financial risks, reserves, and corrective actions.
- Reviews and approve accounting entries, reconciliation, and reporting prepared by staff.
- Ensures compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company accounting policies.
- Coordinates with external auditors and responds to audit requests in a timely and accurate manner.
Financial Reporting & Close
- Leads and manages month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prepares and reviews financial statements, AIA billings, work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, and supporting documentation.
- Produces monthly financial reporting packages for executive leadership and Board review.
- Prepares weekly cash flow reports and forward-looking cash projections.
Cash Management & Reconciliations
- Monitors daily cash activity and maintain accurate cash flow reporting.
- Manages liquidity to support project and operational needs.
- Performs and review bank and balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Identifies and communicate cash risks, variances, or trends to leadership.
Tax & Regulatory Reporting
- Prepares and file sales and use tax reports and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Supports regulatory reporting requirements related to construction and project activities.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentors and supports project accountants and accounting staff. Corrects as necessary.
- Serves as the primary accounting point of contact for the General Manager and CFO.
- Provides regular accounting updates in leadership and executive meetings.
- Collaborates with the Controller and accounting team to ensure consistent reporting and controls.
- Participates in accounting, project management, and cross-functional meetings to support operational alignment.
Process Improvement & Internal Controls
- Identifies, corrects, and prevents accounting errors and control gaps.
- Improves reconciliation processes, reporting accuracy, and documentation standards.
- Strengthens accounting procedures to support scalability, audit readiness, and operational efficiency.
- Assists with implementation and optimization of financial systems and reporting tools.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
· Supervises Construction Accountant/Compliance Specialist.
Physical Requirements:
· Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
· Ability to manage stress associated with regulatory deadlines and compliance requirements.
· Manual dexterity to perform data entry.
· Potential for after-hours working including nights, weekends and holidays.
· Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
Travel Requirements:
· Occasional local travel to project sites, vendor locations, or governmental agencies.
· Occasional travel to trainings, workshops, corporate office or meetings as required.

Salary : $90,000 - $110,000
