Job Description Summary
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Charleston Division, is accountable to the CEO of MUSC Health & MUSC executive vice president for Health Affairs, Patrick J Cawley, MD, MHM, FACHE. This position is responsible for the Charleston Divisions achievement of organizational goals, implementation of strategic initiatives and effective leadership of day-to-day operations.The CEO, Charleston Division, will lead the Charleston Division executive team, including the CEO of MUSC Health Orangeburg, chief medical officer, chief financial officer, chief operations officer, chief ambulatory officer, chief nursing officer, perioperative services leadership, chief people officer and is supported by the Senior Healthcare Counsel, Executive Director of Strategic Planning, and the Chief Financial Officer of MUSC Physicians. This position is directly responsible for an annual operating budget of $2.7 billion, 15,000 employees, multiple hospital facilities, local ambulatory care clinics and provides shared oversight for enterprise services.
The CEO, Charleston Division supports 1,031 physicians, 355 APPs and over 900 medical residents and directs care team leaders that provide high-quality and compassionate care to approximately 40,200 inpatients and 1.1 million outpatients annually.
The CEO, Charleston Division, works collaboratively with the leadership of MUSC Physicians (practice plan), College of Medicine and other university (academic) leaders to fulfill the MUSC mission and long-term strategic plan. This leader will serve as the go-to person with respect to all operational and management issues for the Charleston Division and will be at the forefront of anticipating and proactively addressing potential challenges in payer mix and criteria, public policy, consumerism and physician engagement and alignment. Future focused strategies are likely to include ever more bold and aggressive moves in structure, scale, business management, leadership, and culture change.

Job Description
As the face of the Charleston Division organization to the public and to the workforce, the CEO must communicate on multiple levels with varied constituents. He/she must communicate the vision in a compelling and motivating manner. The CEO must be "present" across constituents reaching out proactively, genuinely listening, expressing empathy and compassion, and engendering trust with all. He/she must manage effective relationships and influence among a pluralistic physician population to drive improved alignment.
The CEO, Charleston Division, must balance strategy with an eye toward successful execution of todays priorities in accordance with MUSC Health. He/she must be a mobilizer of the culture and a driver of innovation to foster new ideas, challenging the status quo and experimenting with new consumer-focused initiatives.
A critical CEO accountability is ensuring that the Charleston leadership team is prepared and held accountable for successfully executing the strategy. The CEO must develop and challenge people to new levels while growing executive talent to ensure a strong future bench. This individual needs to delegate responsibility and authority with the team, and through them, he/she must ensure the development of strong talent across the medical center and the division.
Operationally and financially, the CEO needs to determine where and how margins can be optimized for long- term sustainability. Amid changing care delivery models and implementation of service lines, this individual must work with MUSC Health to make critical operational and financial decisions, such as discerning utilization/allocation of assets, service optimization, operating structures and staffing.
Additional Job Description
10 years of progressively responsible experience in an academic medical center or complex healthcare organization. CEO or CEO-ready healthcare system senior executive with demonstrated success managing a multi-site care delivery health system of comparable size and complexity, including significant P&L responsibility. Experience leading or having exposure to an academic medical center environment and a healthcare insurance business model is ideal.
Medical doctorate or a healthcare-related doctorate-level degree preferred; masters degree in healthcare administration or related field required.
