Position Summary
Oncology dietitians are essential members of cancer centers because they identify and treat malnutrition and nutrition related symptoms early, tailor oral/enteral/parenteral plans and help patients complete cancer therapies with fewer complications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

Develop and implement nutrition services for cancer patients undergoing active treatment in an outpatient setting.

Provide medical nutrition therapy including individualized nutrition assessments, counseling, and oral and written nutrition recommendations based on patients’ specific therapies and nutrition needs.

Provide monthly nutrition classes for patients and caregivers.

Provide education for staff addressing nutrition topics and research pertinent to cancer patients.

Develop nutrition education and resource materials as needed.

Collaborate with providers and staff to ensure the nutrition screening mechanism is consistently identifying patients at risk.

Collaborates with other community agencies to promote nutrition and provide education.

Demonstrates excellent communication skills working daily with physicians and other healthcare professionals.

Maintains pertinent and timely documentation in the patient’s medical chart.

Accurately maintains required departmental statistical data.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher in nutrition, nutrition sciences, and/or dietetics
Licensure/Certification
- Current and valid Registered Dietitian credentials in the District of Columbia.
Physical Requirements
- Sit, walk, reach, bend, or twist for long periods of time in a clinical setting.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 100 lbs. as part of the role.
- Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment.
- Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.
